Lets say you name your empire something like "The Trolololo Idiotcracy" and choose the smug slug as your species, everybody is going to think it's a joke and doesnt suspect a thing, allowing you to lay under the radar. They don't stop you before you gain momentum and wreck everything in your path.

This is deception 101. It relies on the target already being in an environment where they expect to encounter very stupid people, so a pick-up online MP game.

The better strategy is to feign incompetence and ask for help.

Honestly have rules in Stellaris Multiplayer group on steam that people can't pick extremely jarring names unless the GM removes that restriction themselves. I don't care what you name your planets or stars, those can be renamed if ever conquered, but not really in the mood to look at LMAO TEH EMPIRE OF SPACE PONIES WOO!!11! on the galaxy map for too long.
