Here's an idea that's been on my mind ever since I read that developer diary that talked about all unit stats being finely scaled instead of the more abrupt model approach of Hearts Of Iron 2. There's been a lot of talk out there that the new system would lead to the abandonment of named models, since obviously you cannot define a name for every single combination of armor/firepower/speed/etc.

But you wouldn't have to. It would be enough to have an excel file that defined 'historical' models as, for example, (GER|ARM|ARMOR 3|SOFTATK 3|HARDATK 1|ENGINE 2)= 'Pzkpfw IIIa' or whatever (I just pulled those specifications out of my ass, but that's not the point anyway!). And the player could always name ahistorical models as they wished, or rename historical ones.

Has anyone played Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri? It didn't have the pre-defined models of Civilization either, but you could still name them.

I don't recall a dev saying that named models, possibly the likes of which you've suggested, won't be in. I think I, like most people on the forum, like the idea of "Pzkpfq IIIa" over "armour".

There won't be 'models' but you will have weaponsystems with their historical names.

Exactly. When you researched "improved tank, 75mm gun" in HoI 1 you were building pz IV or M4 or T-34, depending on your nation. In HoI 3 I hope that the models are varied, like above pz IIIa, b, c, etc, depending on the various techs that can be applied...aside from gun: radios, chassis, gear, suspension, armor, machine guns, and so on.
