So, I'm planning on starting off a game as Portugal, with the aim of creating an Empire from Brazil to Indonesia. Just wondering if anyone has any advice for Portugal overall? I know that Portugal starts off as a fairly poor country without many prospects, so any handy tips will be really good(and to ensure that I don't run my Economy into the ground as I so often do with Spain )

Portugal is actually one of the easiest country in EU3 to play and has a very high potential. Have a look at the Portugal strategy in the wiki.

I haven't played Portugal in DW but have played it a couple times in IN. I have used a modified Portugal strategy in DW with Byzantium and I think it may work for Portugal in DW. Basically you need to get a good trade base to finance troops and research, spam merchants to everyone you can. Research Trade to get to QFTNW as soon as possible. I'm not sure you can see the Azores but if you can, colonize them as early as possible. Get's you a core closer to the new world quicker. Also keeps anyone else from getting a much closer core. You could try and get some turf in Africa from Morocco or Algiers but if your playing 5.2 you need to watch out for manpower problems. Bribe Castile, bribe Castile, bribe Castile. The only person who can really hurt you is Castile, get good relations, an alliance, whatever it takes to keep her at bay. When you get QFTNW the choice becomes spam colonists or develop only a few colonies to city level. If you get QFTNW early enough you really have to spam away. You can reach parts of the New World before you get a core in the Azores. Grab all that turf with one colonist and let them grow. You'll lose a few but most will survive to city status. Before you know it you will have self-sustaining cities over a huge portion of the Americas. If you can afford the infamy annex the American natives. The key to everything is getting a big enough trade income to support this empire. Good luck.

As portugal, you will likely have the lion's share of the Americas (and then, everywhere else), due to the bonuses you get exploring and colonising things. This means you can pick and choose to a large extent, taking the native americans, colonising the carribean and northern brazil, without question.

Once you have colonies, you are essentially invincible until your enemies can find them, regardless if they are kamchatka or the azores, so once you're into the new world, everything is fine, so long as you have rough naval superiority. The only tough part is surviving the early years - until trade 7 (Quest for the New World should be in your first slot, really). For this, you want to ally with Castille and break your alliance with England, as they will be dragged into fighting France very very fast. Castille will drag you into small wars with North Africa early on, which you can join and then do very little in, and eventually white peace out. Use it to get war taxes.

Just remember that there's no point in leaving the Americans alive, you'd be much better off coring them early.

I like guaranteeing Granada on day 1. A perfect opportunity to beat Castille around a bit. Hope England won't get into instant war with France, ally Aragon and maybe something like Brittany. Granada will bring much of North Africa and has defensive sliders. Castille's starting army will spend a long time sieging them...

Step 1: Play as Castille
Step 2: March into Lisoa
Step 3: Pretend that you're Portugal

Castille was always a pain in my side when I played as Portugal. Trade is the only thing that helped me, and I found that some N. African ambitions can help get an economy growing as well.
