...and I normally won't really care, but what happened was that Spain beat the crap out of GB and caused GB to lose chunks of her colonial empire all because Portugal is filthy rich and has a way stronger navy than GB, then later France PUed Portugal and is now invading GB mainland using freaking imperialism CB thanks to Portugal having 8 times the amount of heavy ships GB has. Also, Portugal has 3 times her force limit in her army now, the 4th largest in the world after me, France, Commonwealth, and Ottomans. Just look at that trade income, its filthy!

Waiting pretty much always benefits a map painting enthusiast like me. I have 2.5x the amount of heavy ships Portugal has (although I have only 60 light ships). Not that I plan to invade Europe though since that isn't part of my goals in this run. Whenever I see this ledge though with Portugal having double the income of a blobbed France and more than 2.5x the trade income of anyone else though...

The straw that broke the camels back was really just France successfully launching a naval invasion of GB thanks to PUed Portugal. Portugal and GB should be historical friends so Spain can't go ham all over GB using Portugal, and France PUing Portugal....well I guess that was just unfortunate.

You should see Portugal in the hands of a player. I basically chose them for my first Art of War play-through and I soon discovered forming the West African Charter Company is basically the 'I Win" button. I took only a dozen provinces around Africa as bases on my way to India, and now my income is 120 gold, 60 of which survives expenses such as my inexhaustible fleet and my rampant colonialism.

Every nation that has an end-node will almost always end up rolling in dosh with minimal effort. Sevilla however is the most ridiculous trade node in the game and allows the Iberians to suck up endless trade. It's a major flaw of the EU4 trade system but without a major rewrite of how the mechanics work it's not going to change.

Virtually the same thing happened in my game, France PU'd Portugal, then forced Spain to give Andalucia to Portugal. Now they have 90% of the trade power in Sevilla and it gives them an insane amount of draw in every upstream node.

Ai should be using privateers much more, that would kill some of the trade.
My norwegian trade empire make more money then any other country, think accrually my trade income is higher then the combined income of any country.

Played a Venice game yesterday evening (granted, my first game in 1.8). After 40 years, i had 2k Ducats on my account and all possible buildings built. I don't think it's a "Portuguese" problem.

I really like the trade income.

Two reasons:

A. It forces you to actually deal with trade empires rather than just waiting until you're at their doorstep then invading them with overwhelming military force.
B. It means people can actually start to do more than use +1 advisers. Supporting rebels and giving subsidies to enemies of enemies is now an actual option.

People are too used to getting all the +1 advisers then sitting at 5 income for the rest of the game and scrapping together whatever meager income they can get to build some of the unique buildings. The game has more options than that.

Basically, with Art of War, game became boring again till they nerf trade income

Trade income doesn't need to be nerfed per se, but the one-way trade system has some interesting implications for balance. I'd like to see the mechanic evolve further.

the overall size of trade in the world is perfectly fine. how most of it ends up at certain nations is the problem. pulling trade should force you to make an effort to really get a chucnk from a node. having just a merchant amnd a lot of power in the node after it should not qualify you for half the trade in the node if you have zero ships and provinces there.

They need to improve the trade power propagation system so that it is less binary and has more variables influencing it, like in-land trade nodes, trade range and so on. The system needs to be more complicated than just parking 300 light ships in Lubeck/English Channel/Bordeaux/Sevilla and run dry all the upstream nodes.


In my current Scandinavia (denmark) game, Portugal, Spain and England are attempting to divert money out of my Caraibas -> Cheasepeak -> StLawrence -> North Sea -> Lubeck trade nodes chain.
For this reason, i am regularly waging naval wars with them. And I must say it's a very easy fight. Probably because i got +100% naval force limits from my national ideas/exploration/quantity.
I've sinked the Portugal/Spain/Great Britain navies a few times, taken their colonies and ruined their trade.

Denmark is an amazing kingdom for Thalassocracy.
