I'm playing a Portugal in the MyMap scenario. The year is 1553 and I own most of Iberia. Spain/Castille is long gone, and Aragon owns two Iberian provinces. Granada owns three (berber/muslim) and England one Navarrresse province.

I'm considering releasing Spain as a vassal so I can grab some of the ToT provinces that France has settled in Africa. OTOH, I've heavily conquered/colonized in Spain's ToT area.

If I release Spain they will get two provinces, including a port, so they will be able to colonize/annoy me in the Carribean.

So, when/if should I let Spain go?

BTW, I have no desire to go for WC.

If you release Spain they will get the entire Iberian peninsula, minus your own Portugese cores. Unless you edit the savegame that is.

Well in your case, why don't release them immedeatly if you're only gone use them for the ToT. To stop Spain from taking your provinces just fortify/garrison them. They'll eventually start to colonize anyway (since they know your maps when you release them). And if you want to you can annex them and release them again, starting the whole process over again.
Another added benefit of annexing and releasing them regularly are that their provinces will be the same culture and religion as yours.

With MyMap they get three provinces - Castille, Toledo and Valencia

Did you only have four of the provinces in Spain's revolt.txt file?

Actually it appears that the ToT boundaries aren't restored, with MyMap at least, after Spain is recreated, rendering this strategy mostly pointless...

The annoyance is relative. They will not disembark if they know you are already there. Spannish AI usually goes to territories in their zone if they are not colonized. Apart from that they can send conquistadors to your colonies if those colonies are in the way to unexplored zones.

Tipical paths for spannish conquistadors are Tampico - Saltillo - Coahuilha; Ensenada or Altar and then North; Copetonas or San Matias - Pampas - Corrientes. If you fortify and garrison your land borders you'll be safe.

Another options is exchanging maps with them. By knowing already the inland americas they will not go there if you are in the way.
