But is there no text in text.csv that could somehow be reused for a new event? I thought the rule was "no new event text", which means that if the text already exists you can get a new event in.

That's not the main problem. How, mechanically, do we get POR and CHI to know of each other's existence in an event? The only possibility I can see is the Relation command, but I haven't got around to testing if that has the desired effect.

I suppose an alternative is to start the scenario with the two countries knowing each other's capital provinces.

That's not going to be enough, is it? Getting to know China would only reveal its capital, but not location of Guangdong, right?

POR knows Guangdong as soon as it gets it, that happens automatically. But it doesn't get to know any surrounding provinces nor CHI itself.

What Trin Tragula said - unless it was changed in one of the recent betas (I still haven't played anything past July beta for the lack of spare time), that is not true, Portugal does not get either information on acquisition of Guangdong or the knowledge of the province. You could check the stats of Guangdong in the ledger, but you can't see the province itself - it remains TI.

What if Portugal's capital was moved there and back again in a single event? Would the temporary capital location reveal the province for Portugal? Would adding soldiers there do the trick?

There isn't a way to have an event popup a note for another power, except by triggering another event for that power. As we are allowed no new events that use new text (ie text.csv cannot be altered), and such an event requires new text by definition, we're stuck with it as is, I'm sorry.
Technically the text for the Chinese event could be used. It wouldn't make a whole lot of sense, but it might help.

Better still would be to have the event make CHI and POR know about each other as well. Can anyone think of a way of doing this? Would a Relation command do it, for instance?

I'm pretty sure that doesn't work.

No. Adding soldiers in Guangdong would not reveal the province. The province would still be Terra Incognita and you could not see your army in the map.

However, you could select the army using Page Up/Down buttons (provided you have another army), and then you could order them to march into one of the Chinese provinces - that would allow you to establish the diplomatic relations with China (if you knew you're supposed to do that and how to do it, that is) - that's some improvement on the situation we have right now, but it's far from a perfect solution. We essentially need a way to reveal Guangdong to Portugal.

Also, for those of you who have played Portugal a lot, do you usually make it to China and discover Guangdong before it is given to you? My impression from the quote is that most people usually don't. Thanks.

Ron

Hi Ron!

Yes definitely. As Portugal I know that area around 1470-90 or so. But not thru explorers but by buying the maps. Explorers are for the really troublesome areas (although as POR and SPA you get several explorers they are still a useful commodity early in the game).

But the first time I played Portugal I had the same experience as you had :)

Not only do I think you need to know if you have it and be able to see Guangdong, but also a route to get ships to and from there. It doesn't make sense if you have it, can see it. Can watch it revolt away. And can't send anyone there to retake it.

Portugal gets so many historical explorers that sending one to Guangdong once you see it so that they can establish a sea route shouldn't really be much of a problem.

CHI will get to know POR, because POR will own a province that it sees. I don't see a way to get POR to "see" CHI without extra events, though.

One other solution would be to have a new event command, "discover" (or somesuch) added, which reveals one specified province for the country receiving the event (or, perhaps, for a country specified within the command). It would be *quite* popular among the mod-makers, and it should be relatively easy to add (compared to other feature additions - at least it seems that way to me).

In the China event add the following lines

command = { type = dynastic which = POR }
command = { type = break_dynastic which = POR } please check syntax

This would theoretically give China a RM with Portugal and immediately break that RM. It should expose the capital of China to Portugal and the Portugese capital to the Chinese and allow the two powers to commence diplomatic relations. As for how to give knowledge of all provinces to the other, I have no clue.

EDIT: You could give a random conquistador in Guangdong to Portugal. Since all surrounding provinces are owned, it can walk around "discovering" each of them.

I think that Johan could come up with an answer...

When you first "meet" another country (usually through trade centres) you get a message that you "discover" their capital so there must be a trigger/check that is looked at on a regular basis. If Johan would divulge what that check is and how the subsequent "discovery" is coded then you could run the same check/discovery procedure.

It's happened both ways to me. When I started this thread, I had inherited Guangdong by annexing Portugal--could see it but couldn't get there. The second time, when I resumed the thread, I was playing Portugal and found out that I owned Guangdong only because of a revolt there, but I could neither see it or get there.

sorry, i dont think anything will make 2 countries know each other in an event except the secede province command. of course, you can make the province switch back to China immediately, so that they will know each other's capital. but anyway knowing the capital doesn't make portugal know China's CoT, which is probably what you want.

Is it possible to trigger a shared discoveries diplomatic move by event? Or is that completely ridiculous?

That would give China the maps of portugal, which I doubt would be good for gamebalance.
