Just diploannexed Portugal and found myself in possession of Guangdong. Not a problem, except I wonder, how did the Portugese ever get it? Their nearest colonial port is Inhambane. So how did they get to Guangdong and capture it?

Or, as I suspect is the case, is there some event that gives Guangdong to Portugal or does Portugal start the game with Guangdong as a trading post or colony, to represent Macao? Having never played Portugal, I don't know but figure this must be the case.

Just like Russia and China signing the Treaty of Nerchinsk even though Russia hasn't planted a single settler in Siberia.

Portugal gets Guangdong if China chooses not to isolate itself, IIRC. Even if Portugal and China both don't know that the other exists, this will still occur. IMHO, it should definately be change so that Portugal must know that China exists, if that is possible.

The funny thing about that event is that Portugal isn't notified that they receive the province. I play Portugal all the time and have to keep checking the area if I've got it, as there is no message box or notification. The first time I played, I went for ages (don't know how long exactly) without knowing. I got a random conversion event and I thought that's strange cause all my provinces were Catholic. I looked and it said the province of Guandong. The province can be a pain in the arse cause China gets heaps of those rebellions and their rebels spill over. They take your province and then they can rebel back to China. It doesn't happen the other way around because China's bloody government falls every ten minutes and isn't long enough for them to defect!!!

There isn't a way to have an event popup a note for another power, except by triggering another event for that power. As we are allowed no new events that use new text (ie text.csv cannot be altered), and such an event requires new text by definition, we're stuck with it as is, I'm sorry.

Better still would be to have the event make CHI and POR know about each other as well. Can anyone think of a way of doing this? Would a Relation command do it, for instance?

I'm currently playing a GC as Portugal and this Guangdong thing happened just as you have stated. I was never told that I received it and didn't realize that I had it until I got a heretic event in 1573 and the revolt was in Guangdong. When I clicked on the "Go To" button it took me to the middle of the great white unknown, as I have not discovered China yet. Really a rather ridiculous event, from the Portugese side, although I guess it means something to someone playing China.

By the way, what is the event/event number that gives this? I couldn't find it in the major events for China file.

Also, for those of you who have played Portugal a lot, do you usually make it to China and discover Guangdong before it is given to you? My impression from the quote is that most people usually don't. Thanks.

Ron

You SHOULD try and find China asap. Its CoTs make it just as important as India, so most players will make a beeline there unless they have reason not to. Maybe Paradox should make an event for the Portuguese side mind you, this seems to get a lot of people who don't know about it.

And I'm still willing to fix this if someone can come up with a way of making two countries know each other in an event.

I had it happen to me while I was playing China. Its one of those event where you get a COT for doing it.

When I did it, it took forever to get it back to me. I think the AI has a better way get to China and it makes sense from that view. WOuld have been good idea if I had loaded up as Port. to see is they did find a way there.

That's not going to be enough, is it? Getting to know China would only reveal its capital, but not location of Guangdong, right?

Thanks, found it now. Wasn't looking for something called "Closure of China" so I missed it. Thought it might be "Give the Hairy Barbarians a piece of land that they can keep for the next 400 years or so on which they can build casinos" or something like that. :D

But the hairy barbarians didn't build casinos. The loyal people of the Middle empire who happened to live in that small piece of land given to the barbarians built them. :p

But is there no text in text.csv that could somehow be reused for a new event? I thought the rule was "no new event text", which means that if the text already exists you can get a new event in. Just having something like "We have discovered Guangdong" pop up on the portuguese side would be great. You usually only find out about it when something bad happens there. But having the event only fire after the chinese have relations with Portugal would be even better. Of course, it will make it so that China only "closes" after meeting the portuguese, while the english can trade there at will. Historically, the chinese probably found the portuguese to be the least obnoxious of the "foreign devils". :)
