I was awoken at a unearthly hour by the kings Royal guard, at first I though they were going to question me about the 22 Ducats missing from the Tangier treasurey, but to my great suprise I was brought before the king and told that I was to become the new chief minister. I was rather shocked at this news and unsure if I wanted my position but the sight of my new office and my new salary soon made up my mind.
My first job was to survey the kingdom, 4 land provinces including a centre of trade, 3 Islands in various states of usefulness, two armies, the first in tago (15/5/0) commanded by col. Salor and the second in Tangiers (9/1/0) commanded by my old school chum Nitera, finaly the navy with the exlporer Gian Cortes-Real at its head which stands at 21 ships (18 regular navy 3 with GCR).
Looking at the map of europe the first thing that strikes me is he large and mighty kindom of Spain to the east, so I marry off a minor Royal to the king of Spains youngest son which improves our relations with them a little, another I notice is that Africa in particularly southern Africa is hard for our to reach so I ask my deputy to go and round up some prisioners and send them to Ferando Po, this accomplished by the 4 of January, so with little else to do I sent GRC off to Cape Verde so he can map out the waters near there.
I was just starting to think that this job would be an easy ride and was in fact planning to sneak back to Tangier to deal with a lose tounged former 'buisness associate' when the foriegn minister comes in and informs me that Turkey has decleared war on the mameluks, I wasn't overly bothered by the news until I was informed that I had to make a report to the king on the matter because he takes a keen interest in foriegn affairs, damnit can't he just amuse him self with hunting and mistresses like other Kings... I make my report to the king the next day (12th January), he seems particularly interested in the Turkish claim on Allepo, after nearly 20 mins of humoring him and trying to answer his questions an aide burst in and told me that I was required in my office on a matter of the upmost importance the king was slightly miffed at his report being cut short, but he saw that it was a serious situation so he let me go, thank heavens for small mercys I thought as I left that room however the news was not good France with their allies Savoy and the Papal states had decleared war on England, I felt sorry for England but there was little I could do.
The next few months saw little action execpt for England getting slapped around a bit and a few battles in southern Spain of which Granda actually seemed to come out best in, however I had underestimated Spain when a report was delivered to me about a 65 strong army heading towards Sierra Neverda I almost fell off my chair, by the begining of April Granada was part of Spain. The next few months again passed off quietly, my former 'business associate' was sadly drowned (he feel overboard, I mean how careless...) on his way to Lisbon to present evidence to a special concil on corruption, he will be sadly missed.... While still bust savoring this piece of good news I recived another, a colony on Ferrando Po has been established and with it a port which will come in useful later on.
A flurry of diplomatic activity followed, I a second cousin of a king and married him off to the king of Narrava's niece I also realised that we could use a strong alliance because of our weak military position, I summoned the Austrian ambassador and proposed that Portugal join his countries alliance, I could hear the little swine laughing outside the door and so was not very suprised when the reply of 'NO' came back, after this setback I decided to send out GCR to search the waters around Cape Verde. on the 11th of November I was informed that the Mameluks had surrendered Nybsuybin to Turkey and payed an indemnity and 181 ducats, the king one again wanted a report on the situation so I sent a deputy to deal with it. Exactly a month later I was informed that the Teutonic order had payed a 161 indemnity to Poland, I was not even aware that there was a war going on, so I gave the people at the foriegn office a good rollocking with plenty of not so subtle referances to heads, axes and blocks....
Thankfully all of Europe lasped into inactivity over the winter period which meant that I could spend Christmas with my family in Tangier, to rest and preape for the following year.
1493 truth be told was a farily slugish year, near the begining Russia had decleared war on Kazan, which aroused as much interest as you would expect in Portugal, however in the same month an event of some importance came about after years of trying to find an a good ally we settled for England, who were still getting the worst of it in their war with France, but I hoped that they would come in handy in the future. the only other thing to occur in that year was the expansion of our trading port in Senagal.
1494 was another quiet year, in fact nothing at all happend until may when Austria with thier allies Hungry and Wuttermberg decleared war on Bohemia, slightly unfair we thought but that didn't stop me from having a sly bet on an Austrian victory. I decided that our relationship with England needed a firmer footing so I married off another member of our nobility to an English noble with a somewhat questionable heritage, still it did the trick and relations with England went up to over 100. Almost before the hangover from the Royal celebration has subsided another piece of great news GCR has discoved Brasil, we drink a hearty toast to him as he drinks urine and eats weavil filed biscuits on a leaky old hulk. Reviewing the military situation in England is a depressing business the English seem to be incapable of winning a battle on their home turf but what they lack in ability they make up for in courage and in october they are rewarded with a victory in Anglia, 18000 French were killed or captured.
1495 saw the death of our king and after a national day of mouring a new king, Manuel I was crowned, I met the Monarch the next day and we talked a lot about things ranging from foriegn policy to a quite heated discusion about which was the best Inn in Lisbon! I think the new king and I will be able to work togther well. Also we finaly achive level 1 infrastrucure, I promote some Balifs looking at the accounts we will need the extra money. Two new explorers are waiting for us as well, Da Gama and Cabral. I send Da Gama off to Fernado Po and Cabral to the Azores. Just as I was about to leave the office on this most busy day when an Rather sheepish looking aide told me that we had advanced in both land tech (2) and naval tech (3), wonderful news!
On the 1st of Febuary while the wind howled outside my office I was informed by a minor offical that Autria and her allies had signed a white peace with Bohemia, bah more money down the drain. However puting this personal loss aside, I study the peace treaty which England has signed with France, I cursed my allies stupidity they gave up Calis and Bristol, whch gives the French a base from which to ravage England, plus 133 in gold. This does not leave our allies in a good position and we pary that they can rebuild before they fight another war. A few days later an offical from the colonial office informs me of the discovery of new Provinces in Brasil, I immediatly order traders to be sent to Recife and Diamentina. The very next day I her here the shocking news that the King's sister married off to France a long time ago has died, the king is heartbroken and is going to Cape Verde for a rest, meawhile I marry off his 2nd cousin to a French princess, who if rumors are to be believed will give him plenty of *ahem* happiness and joy in his married life, the lucky sod. The year winds down quietly the only interution to the Christams celebrations is the news that a trading post has been set up on recife, we drink a toast to the traders, in fact we seem to drink a toast to everyone in Portugal...
Following the eventful last year and the excesses of the Christmas period what I need was a nice quiet year and I got it, apart the occasional disturbances of people informing me about new trading posts being set up nothing really happend. We now have trading posts in South America (Recife (3) Parnabia (1) and Diamentina (2)) and Africa (Senagal (2) and Namaqua (1))
1497 started with the news that Camoens was ready for some exploring in Lisbon, so send him off to Sout America to satrt mapping it all out, I personal see to it that he is provided with enough flags to claim the entire continent, and after his ship leaves port we all drink a hearty toast to him back at the Palace. Later that month I was study a report which details an unoccupied province in Southern Africa, I was aware that we needed a port in the rejoin and so I ordered another visit to Lisbons prision to collect some more volunteers fro the task, the next day 100 men are sent off to set up a colony in Table province. I also set about finding a husband fro the kings youngest daughter he loves riding and has a real love of horses, I suspect this may be because she looks like one, the king has given me the tast of finding a husband for her, no prince in Germany is too keen on the idea but we do find an elderly and very rich merchant from the Hansa league to marry her off to in the end. the rest of the year was quiet and I was just preparing to go to my new country house for Christmas when an aide looking as white as a ghost handed me a folded report and then disapeared before I could ask him anything. When I read the report I could see why the natives in Parnabia had destroyed the colony, I was furious how had the imbeciles who were suposed to look after trading post managed to annoy the natives enough to burn their little outpost, if the goverenor wasn't already dead I would have had him executed. However my anger quickly turns to thoughts of revenge when I realise that Cameons has just arrived in Recife, I send him an order to go to Parnabia and crush the natives.
In early 1498 General Cameons arrives in Parnabia, the natives take one look at his army and realise how big a hole they have dug themselves and run, however they are caught and slaughted in two battles, when the dust settles not a single native man is left alive, the surviving women are taken and sold to a merchent from Amsterdam, heavens knows what for, well in fact I have a fair idea... I send the victorius General off to explore the continent. when I hear news of the battle I order more colonists to be sent there (and a large party to be thrown), the offical who I send seems to be on first name terms with half of the scum in there now but at least he gets the job done and on the 16th of Febuary 100 new colonists leave Lisbon for sunny Brasil. The kig of France died in April and a new king, Louis XII took his place. Our king throws a Royal celebration upon hearing this, any excuse I supose...
The colonists I sent to Table province have finally set up a colony, I order more colonists to be sent there and for Da Gama to sail down to the new port to do some exploring. A scandle involving the kings son and the son of another noble breaks, this requires urgent action so he is married off to a Venitian merchents daughter with extreme haste, I'm sure he will settle in fine... when the fuss has died down I recive a report that Russia and Denmark have declared war on Kazan, which is met with slight shrug from me. Finally I recive the news that the expedition to Parnabia was lost at sea, damn.
1499 Started with a piece of good news, our colonists had sucessfully expanded Cape colony in Table province, I decide against expandeing it any further for the time being. A new trading post is also set up in Para. The rest of the year is quite until I recive news that Kazan had surrendeed to Russia, giving up the province of Lipesk and paying 250 Ducats to them, reaction to this news is non existant, however the following month a piece of interesting news does come in Cameons has dicsovered the amazons we celebrate is success while he hacks his way through the jungle, such is life. Now the only explanation I can offer for the next turn off events is that on the 30th of november the king of courland must have pissed in the king of Polands cornflakes, because the following day Poland, Spain, Naples, Lorraine, The Palatinet, Hessen and colonge all declear war on poor little Courland, I almost choked on my breakfast when I heard this.
1500 the dawn of a new century and an excuse for a major piss up at the palace, when I wake I see apile of papers on my desk, no rest for the wicked I supose. First of all another member of the Cortes-Real family steps up to do his bit for Portugal and Alemdia also makes an appearance in Lisbon, I put him in command of the army, for I have decided to invade Morocco. I make preperations by builidng some artiliary in Tangier and sending the army from Lisbon to Tangier. While this is taking place my dear friend Diaz, who was exploring the Caribiean dies, we bury him with honours in Lisbon and a day of mourning is held all over Portugal. A week later we recive the rather unsuprising news that Poland has annexed Corland. Finally on the 1st of August the invasion force is ready in Tangier, I go to the Moroccan ambasadors residence and hand him the declearation of war, he look rather suprised but he does regain enough composure to tell where to shove the declearation. I decide to let the Moriccans attak me first and see how much their army ill be worn down by the weather, 2 days later a 49 stong Moroccan army is marching toward our 33 strong invasion force I travel to Tangier to keep an eye on things.
On the second of may the Moroccans arrive I watch from a nearby hill top and watch a fantastic performance by our troops, 40,000 moroccans killed or captured for the loss of just 500 men, the next day General Almedia satrts marching his victorious amry south towards Morocco itself, I stay in Tangier where a victory celebration is held.
1501 was a year almost entirely comsumed by the war in Morocco, on the 3rd of January Almedia caught up with reminants of the Moroccan army and gave them a drubing, Fez was put under siege, it fell just a month later, Almedia was then told to wait until reinforcments (1/1/0) from Tangier arrive meanwhile he fights a costly battle outside fez which reduces his army to 23, just a month later another Moroccan army attacks, all 12,000 were killed or captuered for the loss of 200 of our toops, the reinforcements arrive and Almedia marches south, on the 1st of November he wins a battle at Toubkal and besiege the province. During this time the Moroccans sent no less than 8 peace offers, I made him wait outside my office for 3 hours before he was made to crawl on his hands and knees and deliver the peace offer to which I alwasy responded no, I have never heard language more vile than that was uttered under his breath each time he crawled out of my office.
1502 was another good year fo us and it started with a another victory for us in Tourbkal but I am distired by reports of a large (20) army coming up from the South, our army has been reduced to only 19 and I can't afford to raise more men. Some less than interesting foriegn news reached me on the same day, Crimea surrendered Kaban and Azow to Persia and payed 33 Gold for peace. The moroccan (20) army was shown how a battle should be conducted they lost 15,000 we lost barely 1,000 souls Tourbkal finally falls on the second of March and we send some reinfrocements from Tangier (2/1/1), anothe tiny army shows up in Tourbkal and is quickly shown the way to Paradise, we also hear that the mameluks payed Cyreniacia 69 Ductas, I almost raise half an eyebrow at this news. The reinforcemnets arrive and Almedia marches south and destroyes the last Moroccan army (5) in a quick battle before assualting the fortress. Its all over by the 7th of November and Morocco is now part of Portugal! We throw Almedia the biggest party ever when he arives back in Tangiers no expence is spared.
However waking up three days later I realise that the rest of the empire needs attention so I pack up my things and depart for Lisbon the next day...
My first job was to survey the kingdom, 4 land provinces including a centre of trade, 3 Islands in various states of usefulness, two armies, the first in tago (15/5/0) commanded by col.
