Is this an impossible situation?

I'm playing Portugal for the first time.* Some event has fired and now I'm at war against China, a country which I have no diplomatic relations with, nor have any of its provinces been discovered. Spain was my ally but they chickened out. The event gives me a province in the middle of Terra Incognita, and somehow I'm supposed to defend it?

Since the province is Guangdong and not Macao, maybe I'm "supposed" to lose, historically speaking? Anyway I'd give it back to China in exchange for peace...but my diplomats won't go into Terra Incognita.

*more precisely the first time I played Portugal past 1500. And I actually haven't cheated in this game :) , although I've had to mint like crazy until I could capture Zanzibar.

I'm playing Portugal too and I'm not an expert. All I know is I got Guangdong for free too, but with no war. Got 3 provinces in India in the same way. And still got all of them by middle 1600's.

If I were you I'd wait to see if China gives up. They are a country with lots of rebellions and financial problems so I think you have a good chance China proposes peace to you by exaustion, if you can wait some time.

buy some maps (it really helps) from indochina coutries, and the whole southeast asia is yours to take... if you're not into brazil, of course!

guangdong is the province where the city of macao exists (as kowloon(?) is to hong kong), so you don't have to lose it...

It's an ahistorical choice for China I think - usually you get the province for free with no problems. I think if China takes it you should get their capital, and you could cede the province then. Otherwise just wait for them to offer you something.
