Yeah sure, but remember, the AIs around you almost certainly wont do it. So while you spend 1000 points developing and getting institution (development on its own is a pretty good thing!), howeverever many decades it takes for AI to catch up, they will waste those 1000 points on tech penalties. Depending on geography (where on the map you are) you can develop in an area that minimizes the AI benefiting from you!
Actually the AI around you will just get it a few years after you spend all those points -.- And they get it for free...

You could always take Danzig in your initial war with T.O.:

You can't take Danzig as it isn't in coring range, and you (or at least I) can't beat Pommerania before Poland goes ham on the Teutons. And even then, alone you don't stand a chance against the Teutons unless Poland pulls off a stack-wipe (I often see the Teuton army retreat to Livonia behind the forts until they peace out).

Just to be clear. If I create a colony in the New World, that colony will receive the Colonialism institution. I have seen this. However, to get it in my capital, I need to create a Colonial Nation, ie 5 colonies in the same region. Correct?

If you spawn a colony nation (North America, South America or New World iirc), your capital province, and every port that can be physically traced to your capital, will get the bonus.

You have to cheat a bit here. Make sure you are allied with Poland and they call you into their war. Don't engage in any fights, just try to occupy as many of the sieges as possible so that when the peace arrives, Poland is limited in what it can take from the war. That should give you enough time to take some of Pommerania and accrue enough alliance points to call Poland in and control the war the next time around.

It's the only way really. Although I've noticed that the Teutonic Order seems more likely to get stronger alliances in this new patch and often wins the first war.

Colonialism will be changed soon though, right? As of now it kinda screws anyone east of France because they simply can not get the range required to get an American colony this early. Colonialism regularily reaches northern Germany in only the 1540s (and I had one case were it arrived after the Printing Press had already spawned), which is pretty ridiculous.

Why would they change that? Seems to working as intended.

Or substitute "Overlord" with "Parent" or "suzerain" or maybe even "origin" ...
The current one was somewhat unclear to me at first as well, at first reading seeing "homeland" as referring to the current core lands of the (New World) colony itself, not the originator nation from whence the colonists sailed forth.

I'm not sure what "homeland" means either though. It's certainly not as specific, in my mind, as what you're suggesting.

Does it have to be land-connection-to-capital? I.e. English lands on the continent don't count?

Non-colonial core? Then if you create a state in Cuba, those get it, but not if you don't?

Or do we want it to mean "home continent" instead? -- a thing that means a lot less ever since the "distant overseas" stuff got changed a few patches ago.

"Homeland" doesn't explicitly mean any of those things to me, and unlike the real world, the "colonists" don't actually board a boat and set forth in game, so we're referring to a parent nation, not their origin port. If it needs to mean one of them, it is still vague, even left as "homeland"

The modifier in the screenshot applies in the homelands ports and capital (i.e. Europe in your case).

The tooltip should probably read: "port or capital of nation with new world colonial nation".

I guess you could also make Australia count and just say "port or capital of colonial overlord".

Right now the tooltip can be taken to suggest the bonus is from having a port as the colony, IE you get the bonus "in the colony's homeland". There isn't much disambiguation between "home provinces" in the context that you would get war exhaustion and "home provinces" in the sense of "provinces belonging to colonial overlord that may or may not even be state cores".
