This maybe off topic but i don't know where else to post. I just read some competition on making the turret for the Tiger tank. And one of them mentions Porsche (spelling?). Is this the same company that brought the 911 and Carrera GTs? THanks. By the way, 1.03b Very Hard furious is indeed harder. I slumped for several months infront of Paris. Also, the SU put up quite a fight.

Actually, it was the King Tiger (Tiger II) that you're referring to. There were two turret designs. One by Porsche, one by Henschel. The Henschel turret was the one used in the production model of the tank. There were a number built with Porsche turrets, but they were relatively rare.

And yes.. it was the same company as the one that now builds the 911, etc.. although I don't recall ever reading anything about them being part of Krupp...

Good picture of a Tiger II with a Porsche turret:

http://www.jed.simonides.org/tanks/papa/pz6tiger2_series/tiger2-porsche/tiger2bp-intro.html

And one with a Henschel turret:

http://www.jed.simonides.org/tanks/papa/pz6tiger2_series/tiger2-henschel/tiger2bh-intro.html

Porsche turret was more streamlined. Henschel turret was roomier and easier to manufacture.

Good links!
The Porsche turret looks a lot like early Leo 1 turrents doesn't it?

Actually, the reason why there were both turrets was because both companies had a bid out to manufacture that particular tank. Porsche was so confident that his design would win, that he had already started production on them, and when he lost the contract, they decided to use the turrets that they'd already cast in the Porsche design on the first set of tanks to speed them into service.

There's also the thing that Porshe had about machine guns.

They kept leaving them out of their tanks.

That drove Guderian nuts. He even had the Maus cancelled because Porshe forgot the machine guns...again.

And this is after the Ferdinand fiasco where they were originally built without MGs...and payed for it at Kursk.(Which were rebuilt Porshe Tigers which...you guessed it...had no MGs...Porshe never listened to the tankers...and never learned.).

Some comments:

Actually the first "Tiger", PzKpfw VI, came with both Porsche and Henschel turrets, they where Ausf P and Ausf H.
They where both originally delivered for Hitlers 53rd birthday on the 20 April 1942.
But the order for the Ausf P was only 90 units. Placed as an insurance in case Henschel failed to deliver.

Then the Ausf P metamorphosed while still unfinished , production wise, to the Elefant Panzerjaeger. This beast was originally named Ferdinand ( as stated ) and had it´s defensive armament removed. ( it also had the air-cooled (!) Porsche engines removed and were fitted with Maybach engines instead).

I don´t think one can blame Porsche for leaving the MG out of the Ferdinand. Actually those units were rebuilt by the Alkett factory in Berlin-Spandau.

And as far as I know, all latter Tiger II Porsche tanks were rebuilt to the Jaegdtiger tank hunter. They were extremely slow and had an abysmal record of mechanical failures.

And for the Zitadelle, there were 133 PzKpfw VI present plus later addition of 14 Tigers of 3rd company/505th heavy Panzer Battalion.
(Plus also five even later as replenishment)

Note also the the Tiger II eventually lost the roman-numeral type designation and became "PzKpfw Tiger II Ausf B", not "PzKpfw VI Tiger II"

Very possible since BMW made aircraft engines.

The big problem with the Porsche Konigstiger turret was it's streamlined shape. Where the turret meets the hull the turret curves inward, which could deflect otherwise harmless turret armor shots down into the hull. The Henschel turret, with it's blunt well sloped face, was a much sturdier, better armored turret.

Nope, the Porsche-turreted tanks served in the 503rd Heavy Panzer Battalion on the western front. Porsche had completed 50 or so.

As for the jagdtiger,

From German Tanks of World War II by Dr S. Hart and Dr R. Hart p145

"The chassis of the Jagdtiger was is effect simply a slightly extented version of the standard King Tiger platform. Steyr-Daimler-Puch vertically extended the hull sides of this tank chassis to form the superstructure fighting dcompartment, or barbette, within which the main armament was housed."

So the jagdtiger was a Henschel design, as the 50 Tiger P2 tanks completed by Porsche wouldn't be considered the 'standard' King Tiger platform. The Porsche design does look cooler tho.
