I've checked out the Wiki and can't my answer there so I'll ask here:

It's been a while since I played Vicky properly, HoI2 and EU3 stole it away from me. My problem is this. Im the USA, in about 1870/75 ish, can't really remember, I picked the option in this invention, that makes Ideology more important. What a silly move this was. Now I'm stuck with the damn Republican laissez faire liberals. I want the Socialists in power to gain more control of my economy, I can only tax at 50% so its not easy to force my pops into Socialism. I've managed to get 30% of the vote for them but its not enough as the liberals are getting 50%.

Is there anyway to achieve my goals in game? Or failing that, is there a flag I can change in the save file?

Thanks

Yes, the variable in question is called "vote_on_ideology"

Where populism: vote_on_ideology = no

And establishment: vote_on_ideology = yes

So you can change that value in your savegame file, just make sure you change your own value and not that of another country :p

Unfortunately for the USA that doesn't change a lot. They have too many states are there are so few events during campaigns that your choice do not really influence the outcome of the election.
Only if you play small one-province countries like Texas or Uruguay you have a chance of chaning your ruling party as a democracy.

Except in VIP where election events IIRC influence the whole country and not just states? So then it depends if he plays with VIP or not...

Yup, I play VIP, and luckily for me I just got a Communist Demagogue, and since theres no commie party the Socialists went from 31% to 40% and won the election anyway.

But thanks for the help also, that flag in the save file is useful to know.
