Does this game have population, I don't mean numbers I mean if they have something similar to Vic2 or Eu4 ,as in culture or ethnicity?

As you can see population limits the number of factories you can have... It is not the only factor determining the number of factories but it is one.
This was changed. You were right, but the devs wisely decided the old system was too opaque.

Instead, provinces have a certain category ranging from megalopolis to tiny island. Each type has a score from 12(?) to 0, and that score determines how many factory slots there are. Extra factory slots can be added on to the maximum through national focuses (which add a slot and a factory), but otherwise what's there is there. Classification may correlate with population (after all, they needed some metric for picking what province is what) but it is not a factor anymore.

there is and it changes along time as each state's industrial capacity is partly based on population...(there are of course other factors but population is one of them) so it's surely something coded in the province/state files with different starting dates.

As you can see there is a population counter for New york state. 12M limiting the number of factory.
As you can see population limits the number of factories you can have... It is not the only factor determining the number of factories but it is one.


That information of yours is over 6 months old and the system has changed 5 months ago. Factories arent limited by population. That system was simply chaotic and impossible to balance. Instead factory slots are tied to the state type as already mentioned in a much more recent dev diary.

In december, we completely revised how you get factory slots in the game, as the previous system of three different caps, depending on hidden formulas for manpower & infrastructure was too obtuse for players, and impossible to balance.

Now the system is much more clear. Each state is set to a regiontype, which defines the basic amount of factory slots it has. Then we have various national focuses which will add to the cap of factory slots in a state, and finally there are various techs that give percentage bonus to how many factories a state can have.

Population is not like Vicky or EU4. There is no culture or ethnicity. Manpower gets calculated based on the total population of your country, and that's pretty much all it does. The only abstarct way nationality is modeled is the core/non core system. Cores count all population towards manpower, non cores only count 2%.

Yes the game has population, but only a fixed amount per state. It doesnt get any deeper than that, since HoI concentrates about the war not about the internal economy like Victoria does. They dont simulate cultre or ethnics in the game.

You will have cores on other countries holding states that rightfully belong to you tho, i.e where the majority of the population is from your country since they got conquered recently, like transilvania and southern slovakia for hungary and posen (poznan) and danzig (gdankz) for germany for example.

There is no culture conversion, religion or population shifting in the game, since this is not the focus of the Hearts of Iron series.

No need to apologise, it's been a common mistake. Your suggestion is perfectly reasonable. Perhaps @BjornB could put some warning on the DD?

Actually if you look back you will see most remain exactly as announced. Some of the interfaces have changed slightly, but the core information about production lines, abstracted air combat in regions, states, division design, political power, naval combat, world tension, etc is exactly as you see in the WWWs.

The only other major error was the announcement of the National Goals system in DD12, which was replaced completely with the National Focuses in DD14. So anyone reading DD12 in isolation might be confused. But I've not seen anyone raise National Goals by mistake for along time.

In contrast people regularly think the available factory slots still relate to the population level and infrastructure. Maybe because the initial information in DD23 wasn't changed until DD40.

Since we're talking about population I wonder if we mod in new states, or change the sizes of states will we have to research that manually to put in the right numbers?
Or is population in terms of game mechanics tied to actual provinces, so that if we move one province over to a new state the population in game will be transferred with it to the new state?

I doubt anyone but the devs would know, but I'm throwing it out there.

You are speaking of modding? There is no way to move provinces or populations to different states etc. in the standard game mechanics that I know of.

You have to decide on the population, state type, factories already built, airbases, infrastructure, VPs etc and decide which supply areas and regions the states should be in.

Of course, if you are doing alot of changes with a new map. But in the example in the DD of splitting one state into two, then at least you know the original total. You also know if the original state had an airbase and how many factories it had etc. You can work from that to at least get something plausible which doesn't upset balance.
