population growth and looting

I have a question:
In my Macedonia-game I colonized two provinces north of Macedonia, and they were developing fairly good. But for some reason my population growth has recently dropped to minus 4%! It says there are barbarians looting the province, but the barbarian force in both provinces is only 0 or 1. How do I counteract the looting, I already posted two fairly big army's there (6.000 men and 12.000 men), but nothing changes...

I think it occurs for a year after being sieged by barbarians, so if you had to trek to defend your province then it happens.

Looting happens when a barbarian force enters the province uncontested (or wins the battle). The modifier applies for a year, IIRC. Once had an annoying experience as Rome, where all that remained from a barbarian horde were some 1000 cavalry. They proceeded to run all over the place looting all of Italy before I finally could corner them (which proved more difficult than expected, with me having no cavalry of my own and stuff).

Ouch, that must have sucked. Thankfully I've never experienced that.
