Pope Disregards My Pleas

I asked the Pope for repentance (I can't remember the proper name; you basically spend loads of money for a bit of Piety) but he died a couple of days after. It's been years, and the new pope seems to have disregarded I ever asked. When I try to ask again, I find the option isn't there. It seems the game still thinks I'm waiting for an answer.
