Pope culture not Latin?

I understand that popes were selected from various countries with different cultures (though mostly Italy), but would it not be more accurate to make their culture Latin?

I see too many popes with Italian culture and names, and it would be nice to see them become more historical, ie. Latin. Of course, it'll also have the bonus of separating the culture of the clergy from that of the other lords, which I think would be accurate given the time period (though even today the official language in the Holy See is Latin.

Perhaps there could be some form of event which converts the new pope to Latin culture and randomly grants him a new Latin name?

It'd certainly make things more realistic.

How the game represents culture in the game is far from what you think of "culture of the clergy". That is more like a lifestyle than a culture and is best represented by someone having the theological education, similar to how adult men with martial education can be assumed to be knights.

1 I somewhat disagree with. Culture and language are very much linked, but the general papal culture itself is a direct extension of Christian Roman culture which had taken over before the fall of the West, minus the role of the emperor of course. If the emperor of the West remained, I'd imagine the papacy would have remained culturally similar (though weaker) and the emperors would have mirrored this culture.

Back in the day most popes really were in fact Italians. That being said: It's stupid that the capital of the pope is the deciding factor of his cultures. As soon as the pope loses Latium his successors will be of whatever culture their remaining holding is :huh:
It's okay if that remaining holding is in Italy or France. Not so much if the popes start to be Andalucian only.

Really? I've seen the culture of the incumbent Pope being the determinant for the successors. If you push a castilian antipope to the Throne of St Peter then his successors will also be castilian... or at least that happened last time I used an antipope back in .06b

That makes perfect sense to me. If the Pope's temporal realm was moved from Rome to, say, Frankfurt am Main, I would think the majority of Popes would be German.

Somebody elsewhere did a list of the origins of the pope in this period - unsurprisingly most were Italian and quite a few were French (a consequence of the time it was resident at Avignon). While it was not uniform, location of papacy implying culture is a better guide than making it random.

Sorry to say, but your conception of church culture is basicly make-believe. Leaving aside that the connection between the culture of a place between the 4th and 11th centuries is as much that as between the 13th century and now (hint: if you met someone from your area from 7 centuries ago via time machine your chances of even understanding them are low), there were in practice meaningful distinctions in how the Church operated across regions (leaving aside the worldiness vs separation tension that flared up from time to time). That leaves aside that the Papal court in particular was *ahem* fairly worldly. Just because an English pope could speak Latin didn't mean that he had any familiarity with how the papal court functioned, or why any number of Italian states, kings and emperors were so unhappy about x, y and z.

The pope system have a bug:
If i put a erethic antipope on the St.Peter's Throne the successor will be erethic (i've played with my friend's game and i have noticed that there was a orthodox pope and the successors were all orthodox)

I'd say it would be grand to have or build upon the system fro CK1 where the Pope was selected from the bisphops of the Game world.
Not sure how the renaming would work there, byt it was funny to see your son or brother on the Papal throne

I agree, now i need to nominate my son bishop and then antipope and claim the St.Peter's Throne, I hope that Paradox will insert this in the "Deus Gratias" or wich name they'll choose for the theocracies DLC (i hope that the dlc will come soon)
