Pope controller, how is that determined?

I turned Slupsk into a bishopric and a few years later the bishop was elected Pope... now I was thinking my king would be the pope controller, but strangely the king's older brother the duke of Gotland was turned into Pope controller. Since he had nothing to do with either Slupsk or the appointment of the bishop there I wonder how that happened? Does anyone know?

Hm.. I thought it would be whomever the bishop's liege originally was. Well, I guess I should get the game before I start making assumptions about game mechanics :wacko:

Yeah, I explored this by assassinating the pope (he was a puppet anyway ) while an archbishop of mine was first in line for inheritance. So, when the Pope FINALLY dies (something like 5 attempts), my archbishop inherits, England becomes Papal Controller, and the Archbishop of Prussia (the heir), becomes the Papal State and ends up being able to break free of me... Fortunately, when I reloaded my earlier save BEFORE my assassination attempts on the pope the good Archbishop died of "natural causes"...

Seems like folks with high piety values are preferred by the game as controllers of the pope. In my Ireland game, I just had my brother's son and diocese bishop Lochlainn elected Pope, but the lousy Count of Leicester got to control him! His piety was something around 400, mine a mere 60...

Maybe I should just edit the save file.

Edit: changed the save file, but then the title automatically went to the closest relative, which wasn't me but the mother of the Count of Macon, thus the Count got the title. Assassining him brought home the control though
