I've got two species on a newly colonized Tomb World. One has the Tomb World preference and the Rapid Breeders trait. They're growing at 0.2 per month. The other has Alpine preference. They're growing at 0.8. What's going on?

Pop growth rate is partially determined by the percentage of that pop on the planet. You have more of the alpine pops than the tomb world pops on the planet, so they will grow faster.

Planet type preference only has a bearing on the max happiness of the pop, and doesnt play a role in how fast it will grow.

Ah, okay. Still, that Rapid Breeders trait is a little weaker than I'd expected...

Not entirely true.
Habitability is a modifier on how long it will take a pop to fully grow.
If a new pop usually would require 50 "growth", but it only has 60% habitabilty, it will get a 40% penalty. Meaning it takes 70 "growth" until the pop is fully grown. (The base amount changes depending on number of pops on the planet)

The amount of pops on the planet only decides the percentage of "growth" each species gets. It's 1 + 0.1* excess food.
So assuming you have 10 excess food for a growth of 2 and Species A has 4 pops on a planet, while Species B has 1 pop.
Then Species A will grow at 1.6 / month and Species B at 0.4 / month.

This does not change the growth required to fully grow a pop.
