If you treat synths badly they have a chance of starting a revolt midway through the game. I don't think it's a stretch to think a psionic could become a hivemind in a similar situation. Why not have a mirror event to create new hive minds?
While Hive Minds are psionic by nature, the way they function and their connection to the Shroud is radically different from that of regular psychics, making them unable to follow the Psionic Ascension Path.
Things can change *cough* 2.0, 2.2 *cough*. Although, they could simply lose the psionic trait and become a hive mind. I dunno. While Hive Minds are psionic by nature, the way they function and their connection to the Shroud is radically different from that of regular psychics, making them unable to follow the Psionic Ascension Path.
More mid-game crises is something I can absolutely get behind.
Although... I can't help but feel like "rampaging hive mind" fits better as the Bio Ascension version? Accidently creating The Thing or something similar.
Psionic one feels like it already has one - The End of the Cycle - but I can get behind something new that isn't super obvious in how it will ruin your empire.
The Advent from Sins of a Solar Empire? How are you supposed to "poorly treat psionics"?
Sorry, I meant "how are you supposed to badly treat psionics in stellaris", I thought it was obvious. The Advent from Sins of a Solar Empire?

I honestly don't mind- most people seemed to assume Hiveminds fell into the biotech category anyways, and it certainly gives them more distinction from non-gestalt and Machine empires. People wanted this.True, it is quite disappointing really, because it is a very narrow representation of what a hive mind could look like.
Apart from the aforementioned Advent of Sins of a Solar Empire, there are also the Forts from the Astropolis trilogy, which operate as a hive mind through technology. Each individual is subsumed into the larger supermind.
But you'd never create the Advent in Stellaris because the devs have basically written that hive minds are insect analogues rolling in their own filth.
