Empire of Trebizond
Struggle for a place in the Sun

This AAR is my first AAR ever, and will follow the history of the Empire of Trebizond whatever would be it's later fate. Note, that my english isn't perfect, still, I hope everyone would figure the AAR out. This campaign is under progress, but looks very like, that it would be interesting, and perhaps successful. I would use as many screenshots as possible. The game is played on MyMap mod's grand campaign, only personal modifications in the game are corrections of city names of that age, mostly in Asia Minor. Difficulty: Easy; AI: Agressive.

It was the year of 1419, the great conqueror Tamerlane just passed away. Since his death, Alexios IV Megas Komnenos, Emperor of Trebizond felt, that the peace of Trebizond, that was hardly secured by the support of the Khan, would not last for long. He just inherited the throne a couple of years ago, and already lost a war against the Genoese, and feared, that his neighbours would soon move against the Empire. However, noticing that the newly restored turkish states were still trying to keep up their inner stability, he decided to reform the economy as much as possible. Trebizond was one of the most important cities along the Silk Road, and the fact quickly fueled the decision, that trade and fight are essential of the survival of the Empire. Alexios IV started to lower tolls and taxes as much as possible for awhile. Until the September of 1920, his new policy succeded to persuade four merchants to support the financial stability, and the income of the Imperial Treasury.
treb1.jpg

The merchants quickly started their work in Azer, and proved to be quite useful for the Empire. The Emperor quickly seen an opportunity to expand Trebizond's influence in the Caucasian region, by planning an invasion of Circassia, so he could reach the Little Bosphorus (Crimea) from the land. Circassia was weak in those years, not protected by permament military force. After positioning his army in Imeretia, Alexios IV declared war upon Circassia (February 1, 1421), the excuse was an old territorial claim. His only plan was to vassalise the nation, while providing some territories for his ally, King Alexander I of Georgia, despite he was hiding Alexios' rebellious son, Ioannes.
treb2.jpg

treb4.jpg

Quickly taking strategic positions around the Circassian capital and digging in the Imperial forces, they quickly repelled the first attack of the Circassian volunteers (July 23-29), while Alexander I attacked the eastern regions. The next battle ended up in Imperial victory again (September 28-October 6).
treb7.jpg

treb9.jpg

In late January, after a long and harsh winter, the Circassians stroke again causing several losses, and almost gained the upper hand, however, the Trabzon Stratos, a small regiment consisting 2000 pikemen arrived with the supplies (February 7), and helped to crush the enemy forces (January 30 1422 - February 9). Meanwhile, King Alexander progressed well in the sacking of a fortified city in the east, thus Emperor Alexios commisioned the training of another regiment, the Aytokratorike Stratos.

This is all for today, I have 43 screenshots, and the current progress of the campaign stands at October 1, 1428. I'll try to organise the story and the most important screenshots from February, 1422 to October, 1428 until tomorrow. There are too many interesting events and successes to write down. Forgive me for trying to be too accurate, but I love to play this nation, and I use not even a single cheat for it.

There's nothing to forgive. If you're finding the events and what happens in your game interesting, of course we want to hear all about it!

Easy difficulty is...well...easy, though as Wari Bana says you're not exactly the strongest nation on the map.

I'd say your English is just fine. I understood you perfectly, and I liked your attention to detail. Keep it up!

Well, looks like my little AAR already attracted some people, three* of them even posted here, I thank you gentlemen, it's always good to see if my hard work earns it's reward.

However, in the battle, the Imperial forces suffered heavy losses, so most of the soldiers and even the officers started talking openly about a pyrrhic victory. They did not even know, that the Emperor would send the reinforcements.
treb10.jpg

treb11.jpg

After the training of 4000 footmen of the Aytokratorike Stratos finished (The Empire of Trebizond never sent soldiers to battle without some combat trainings), the Emperor quickly sent them out to Circassia to assist the siege on the enemy capital. However, while the Aytokratorike Stratos was trying to cross the Caucasus, the Circassians rode to exterminate the outnumbered besiegers before the Aytokratorike Stratos would arrive. Thanks to the heroic determination of the officers, the soldiers were able to keeptheir moral, and repel the Caucasian horse archers, until the Aytokratorike Stratos finally arrived (June 27), and stroke the Circassians from the back. It was one of the longest battles of the war and perhaps the most fateful of all these battles (June 20 - July 3), the Circassians almost gained victory. The Georgian Armies overran Eastern Circassia shortly after the battle (August 28), and marched toward Ossetia, where the enemy attacks mostly came from. On the 30th of August, the gates of the enemy capital suddenly opened, and an emissary came out to offer the end of the conflict in the case the Emperor pays 2 gold pieces from the Imperial Treasury. Even the soldiers started to laugh at the man as he finished his long speech about how their brave king would strike upon them, if they refuse to lift the siege. The emissary quickly retreated in shame, and after the gates closed again, the Circassians fired their arrows upon the Imperial officers who were talking to the emissary a couple of minutes before. None of the officers wounded in the incident.
treb12.jpg

treb13.jpg

The next battle was an easy victory (October 18 - 22), and the retreating forces were defeated by Alexander I in Ossetia. Meanwhile, the transportation of the Imperial forces became a very important part of the war. Marching for months, and for about 11 hours everyday forced some soldiers to stay at Georgian towns in the hands of nurses. The Emperor's reform however proved to be effecient: he reduced the march of the aviable hours to 9, and enrolled 2 days of siesta after every month of march. From now on, the number of exchausted and 'wounded' soldiers drastically decreased. The regiments also brought carts only for use of soldiers, and it really cost nothing. The first regiment that managed to cross the Caucasus without leaving not a single soldier behind was the Stratos Anatolias. The next peace offer along with the same emissary came at November 13, offering 5 gold pieces to the Emperor, and even a new say was born on that day: "Important as the Circassian offers.". This means, that someone talks too much nonsense with perfect vocabulary, but without proper sense of the situation.
treb14.jpg

treb16.jpg

treb17.jpg

Meanwhile, Emperor Alexius sent six merchants to help strenghtening the market, and they soon left for Azer (December 26). He also made a pact through his royal realatives with the merchants of the neighboring White Sheep (December 30), to share the market for common profit. The Komnenos Emperors always had beautiful daughters, they protected the Empire from destruction for long years.
The Circassian capital fell after almost four years of siege, however the King managed to flee to one of his Ossetian fortresses, but the Georgian forces quickly found and besieged it. He offered 21 pieces of gold for peace, while an army of horsemen tried to raid Emperor Alexius' column, who were heading to visit the victorious armies. They quickly took care of them, because the loyal soldiers went to greet their ruler, and a scout noticed the enemy movement, so they could set up a trap. After the failed commit of murder (they almost reached the emperor), the raiders were lurking around for days, and slowly killed or captured in smaller groups (February 2, 1423 - . They would be released later, as a part of the agreement, but that's still far. Looks like the defensive tactics proved to be useful for Trebizond, and they never lost a single battle against the Circassians. Tough the war was virtually over, some fortresses led by the Circassian King offered resistance, so Alexius IV decided to resolve the peace through diplomacy later. Now, sitting on the thronechair of the fled King, he gazed his eyes upon a port not far from there, formerly belonged to the Imperial Crown... Tamantarkan. It looked very like, that the Geoese were a bit unprepared at the moment, and this opportunity to strike shoudn't be missed.

treb18.jpg

treb19.jpg

Meanwhile however, learning from the failure of the Circassians, Prince Ioannes
aragorn.gif
made a crafty plan to get rid of his father, and take the crown of the Emperor...

This is for now, I've got other things to discuss. I worked on this for three hours, so I hope you would enjoy it. Next time I hope I would be able to tell you the war against the Genoese, the fate of Circassia, and the 'succession'. Perhaps I'll write it down and post it at night.

*EDIT: Ah yes, thanks to all the FOUR of you

Nice finish of the war against Circassia. It shouldn't take long before you have them as vassals and all of their treasury. Genoa, on the other hand, will be a much more worthy foe. I don't think they will cause much trouble at land, but transporting your armies with fleets can't be easy. Anyway, with free passage through Circassia, it shouldn't be a problem to get to the Genoese CoT. :)

Thanks for all of your posts, you really made me happy a bit. I admit, I'm not happy frequently. Well, I will post the next part tomorrow, I'm a bit tired to spend hours again to manage the screenshots. OOn the other hand, I didn't played this since weeks, so I'll continue only after I finished the current remaining reports here. A spoiler: Genoa? It wasn't a bigger threat than I first expected, I used a good strategy against them.

Use it with a Llylewyn's Byzantium Triumphant monarchs and leaders (search the EU2 AGCEEP mod section) :). Just replace it in the MyMAP\db\events\major.tre file. One section upper are the monarchs and the leaders folders. Here can you copy these from the Byzantium Triumphant scenario.

Well, I'll try it in a different game to see if it works or not. Thanks for the help.

Sorry about not posting while this headache refuses to leave me be. I hope tomorrow or after that. Sorry for forcing everyone to wait.

This looks very good and is the kind of AAR I like. I have never played Trebizond, but have knocked around in the are with Ak-Koyunlu and Georgia and that was great fun! I will play Trebizond one day too if I only can find a way trough this game's greatest bug: real life and all it's demands...

Thank you for your patience, I hope other AARs kept you busy meanwhile. The first picture above is the final part of the last battle against the Circassians, the second is the status of the occupation at the virtual end of the war. My apologies for my incompetence, but I had many problems here. Now I finally continue the AAR and I hope I would be able to post more recently.

Despite the Genose weakness, the Emperor had to wait for a better opportunity, because the forces were needed at the border between Circassia, and the waste steppes of the Golden Horde, because the mongols were trying to claim pieces for themselves. It took an entire year until the Horde learned not to harass Alexander's Georgian warriors. One month after the last of the border raids, the Imperial forces stood ready for a surprise attack on the Crimean possessions of the Genoese. On the 1st day of May, a unit consisting 200 light cavalrymen raided the strategic outpost at Bata, and smashed the resistance of the Genoese garrison there (about 600 mixed-infantry), while the main Imperial forces were marching toward Tamantarkan. Alexius IV came to the decision, that the Georgian armies would be only a burden to his campaign, and asked for no intervention. However he expected, that many North-Italian allied forces would try to take over Trebizond, so he commisioned another regiment consisting 5000 cavalrymen as fresh garrison for the capital. It also quickly turned out, that not all of Genoa's allies considered to follow her far from their homeland, these were Montferrat, Modena, and Mantoa. The remaining Genoese allies were the following: Milan, Savoy, and Parma.

treb22.jpg

treb23.jpg

treb24.jpg

treb25.jpg

As the emperor guessed, the Genoese quickly responded by sending their forces to restore order, thus an army consisting 8000 men stormed the shore near Trebizond (both on 5th of July). The reinforcements were repelled easily. Meanwhile at the otskirts of Trebizond, the cavalry (5000) rushed and successfully frustrated the Genoese landing operation.

Sorry for the short update, I am needed elsewhere. I know you expected more.

I hope you get enough warscore to secure the province with the CoT. For some reason the AI is very likely to give away CoT's though, even with very little WS.

But I guess you won't stop once the CoT is controlled? Is it possible to cross the straits to Kaffa? Shouldn't be too hard to beat the army there as well. :)

He'll have a really difficult time reaching the main Genoese land, so that may be out of the question.
But the COT, definately.

Eh, I did not played the scenario since a month, and I wouldn't continue until I successfully post all my deeds. And I think I told you before, that this war against the Genoese is over, so it's better use "past" instead of "future" if you want to guess  I will update soon, but I'm afraid not today, looks very like not even tomorrow :(

Wha? Did I used smileys? huh, I rarely use a smiley and there are two smileys here!
