We can read threads about policies, but what about Politics? Politic should be one of the factor that influence the District/Cities course of development. Politics should orient policies. However, too much emphasis on this factor could become frustrating for the city builders… How to find the right balance?

Ideally, I would imagine that the player’s decision should be rewarded/sanctioned not only in terms of job creation/losses, income generation, population increase, beautiful urbanism, etc. but also with regard his/her approval level by the inhabitants.

Such level of approval would be periodically “tested” through election. Even in democracy there are political dynasties, the player will be one of those, and regardless approval rating or lost elections. A true political animal in a form of a District Governor! But if the dynasty perform poorly at the election, it will have more difficulties to enact policies, face more tax resistance and different kind of protests (from petition to riots). If a large majority is obtained at the District Council (where the cities are represented in proportion of their population), and maintained along the years, the District will attract more habitants, large companies and sponsors (through museum, sport team, media). It will be easier to pass policies and to raise taxes.

As someone who is extremely interventionist and who hates massively the liberals and laissez faire-idiots of Victoria II, I find it necessary to say that this is a great idea which (unlike many other ideas) would actually advance the case of city builders.

Limiting politics to taxation, policies and indirect politics though amount of schools/hospitals/etc feels a bit vague. However unlike the original poster I'd like to see an end game in the form of being voted out of office. Ofc one should also add a weakling-mode for those not brave enough to take on political elections.

The system could be very simplistic. Everyone who lives in the city, and isn't in school or below (a child) are allowed to vote. They can vote for two parties (UK/US style), they either vote for a mayor directly or for a city council which then elects you. If your side wins, you are basically allowed to do whatever and if your side fails then.... end game?

This doesn't have to be included in a sandbox-mode, but if there are campaigns.... then yeah, it ought to be included.
