See this is why the slider thing would work so well. It would/could be based on tech practicality, shipbuilding capacity, leadership, whatever fits, etc.

The slider concept is a decent idea. But it won't happen because it doesn't fit at all with the rest of the production system.

I think Paradox kept the build times to 730 days for gameplay reasons - players are impatient people - so realistic build times are probably a matter for modders.

What I'd suggest is a basic 1100 days buildtime for a battleship which can be modified downwards to 900 based on technology, Practical values, politics, ministers, and/or National Decisions and perhaps upwards to 1300 based on the same. Reducing the buildtime could increase the total cost in some instances.

A x2.5 increase would be fairly historical but probably way OTT in gameplay terms - except for any mods that give the USA an evern more mammoth historical IC.

It's a book, "Nelson to Vanguard: Warship Design & Development 1923-1945". There's only a few paras on this subject, but the examples of similar types given are:

US destroyer escort: 1 mil man-hours early war, reducing to 650k man-hours with experience
UK frigate: 375k man-hours

US Colony-class: £570,000
UK River-calss: £240,000

US Liberty ship: £450,000, 575k man-hours
UK Empire ship: £180,000, 350k man-hours

Submarine construction:
US worker: 3.8 tons/year
UK worker: 8.8 tons/year

The point being that UK yards were much more efficient & productive on a 1:1 basis, but the US had basically unlimited manpower and money so could produce so much more regardless.

And from this week's Dev Diary, a King George V battleship seems to have a base buildtime of 855 days, and 1 point of Practical value gives a buildtime reduction of 0.5%

I think part of the disconnect in build times is that HOI seems to consider time laid down to time completed. What's really wanted is time laid down to time commissioned, i.e. the ship entering active service, all worked up with a trained crew, which took many months usually, even in wartime.

I agree - and one could also add a few months post-commissioning before the crew is ready for war service (though, one could also see this as the period which the ship builds its initial Org value after being deployed)
