Kasperus, as you can see, i'm not arguing that Soviets were worse than Nazis, but giving false data isn't going to help you. There weren't 'few hundreds' but, IIRC, tens of thousands officers killed in many places in SU. [/B]
I meant actually a few thousands when I wrote it, an unlucky mistake  . Btw 15000 is IIRC controversial. Most 'neutral' resources give numbers 6000, sometimes 9000.

Anyways. I don't understand why do you, pals, make distraction between different religions when it comes to number of people killed in WWII.
Some guy made previously some remarks about who 'we' call Polish victims. That`s why at least I made a distinction, just for the sake of statistics. Further you`re of course absolutely right.

The idea of being proud on your country in any even the most banal aspect is here condemned by all means. I don`t say I agree to that point of view (that`s why my dutch friends consider me a right-wing one while in Polish means I would probably be something of a moderate socialist...
Btw, what is actually LPR? Is it a political movement? I cannot recall I have heard of it before. (Raczej do Krakowa nie pojade. Ja mam juz za duzo zaleglych rachunkow u mojego dentysty. ;))

It looks like WWII is still too hot to be counted as history. I let myself to be overheated unnecessary I think. Yeah Kasperus , Animal Farm is better :). About LPR ( Liga Polskich Rodzin i lepiej tego nie t³umaczyæ - newly reformed party based on conservative ways (catholicism and nationalism) in politics. Rather not liberal in economy too. They don't want to join EU. Their main foreign policy fears are: losing independence and hordes of Germans and Dutchmens waiting to buy all land only. There was their idea to close shops and trade in general on Sundays. They have influetial radio station called "Radio Maryja" (covering all country)which is neverending source of jokes to somebodies on the net. They've got about 6-8% but I haven't read the newest statistics.

Tradition and biblical obscuritism. But if they want to marry they can convert to protestantism or leave the church. (I think DK will be very mad if we continue this discussion in polish; nie zapominajmy ze w OT nasze poczty si nie licza ;)

I live in US so I do not know much about LPR, but the points you mentioned have some merit and should be addressed.
About joining EU, there was thread specifically for that where I stated my opinion. I am against EU.
In US shops are open on Sundays and I don't think it is good for family life. Also, as far as I know Germany has the same law (or had). Longer working hours dose not necessarily mean more efficient or profitable.
When comes to having a radio I think that all parties have some type of media in their control (TV, newspaper, magazine or radio). Personally I do not like Polish Catholic church and its influence on politics, but that is whole population fault not just LPR. I would not vote for LPR but I like them better than SLD which now wish to stop old people from working.

Palac Kultury, The Palace of Culture, Built in the 50's with help from Moscow. Most people called it the 'Worst Nightmare of any Baker' because of it's over done socrealistic architecture (it looks like a huge cake). It is ugly, uneffective and not economical. It uses the same amount of electricity as a 150,000 city.

Hmmm, Is that your only reason? Because Poland doesn`t have to keep it`s shops open on sunday. In the Netherlands shops (except for those with souvenirs, and in biggest cities only) are closed on sunday.
Longer workingtimes on evening btw do indeed improve profit. Most dutch do shop on such called shopping-evenings (1-2 days in a week) when shops stay open to 8-9 o`clock in the evening instead of 6.
Also shops with food as supermarkets receive their most customers between 6-8 o`clock in the evening.

Q:Why didn't the Poles try to uprise during the Crimean War, when they would've had foreign support and a preoccupied russian army?

Someone here wrote, that the nazis destroyed Warsaw after the uprising. That's not necessarily true; it's a very popular stereotype. I don't remember the exact percentage of buildings torn down during different periods of WWII and after it, but autumn of 1944 was not the worst period. It was the Uprising itself.

When Warsaw Uprising broke out, large parts of the city centre were already demolished (after 1939 german bombing raids and after 1943 Ghetto Uprising). Many buildings that survived were burned out by the nazis later that year, but most of the walls prevailed. It were the commies who torned them down not to remind anyone of city's "rotten, capitalistic past".

The area around PKiN (Palace of Culture and Science) survived the war in quite good condition (well, as for the citys' average, of course) which means that it could have been rebuilt at quite low cost. But the commies decided otherwise...

Cheers

I guess we are genetically impotent to uprise more often than once per every generation.

(BTW that seems to be another argument in the discussion about the Silesians being - or not - the same nation as Poles... They made it three times consecutively.).

Cheers

about silesia,
I read recently that the EU plans to give Polish 'oppressed' minorities more privelidges, oh sorry I meant rights. What minorities are they talking about? Well.. YOU KNOW... silesians, highlanders, pommeranians... I actually remember that Goebels had a similiar plan. I propose to add a Masovian and Vistulian minority.

This whole fight about silesians is generally funny. Germans call for all silisians not to be afraid to call themselves Germans, the leader of the puny Movement for Autonomy for Silisia tells them to call themselves silisian. This is SOOO funny. My Grandma was born in Mikolowo, Silesia (the whole town is my family :D) my other grandfather is a Highlander, the second grandfather is from Wielkopolska and my other granny is from Masovia... That means I am a quadriple minority! Yeah!
