I made a small mod that fixes some of the very strange province names for Poland. I hope those changes (or similar, as I do not think that my choice of names for those provinces is the only one that is good) will be in one of the first patches...

First thing, that is the most absurd is the capital of Ruthenia province: Ungvar! It is a city in Hungarian Ruthenia, i.e. Carpathia province, not Polish/Ukrainian Ruthenia/Ruś! To avoid such mistakes, I've decided to rename this province to Ruskie (as the voivodship was called).

OK, now I will show you my changes:

localisation\text.csv (only English and Polish names are changed)

Code:
PROV258;Sieradzkie;Lodz;Lodz;Sieradzkie;Lódz;Lodz;;x
PROV259;Sandomierz;Lublin;Lublin;Sandomierz;Lublin;Lublino;;x
PROV260;Lublin;Galicie;Galicien;Lublin;Galicie;Galizia;;x
PROV261;Ruskie;;Ruthénie;Ruthenien;Ruskie;Rutenia;Rutenia;;x

map\definition.csv

Code:
258;36;36;192;Sieradzkie
259;165;38;255;Sandomierz
260;37;40;0;Lublin
261;165;42;64;Ruskie

history\provinces\[files]

new name: "258 - Sieradzkie"

Code:
capital = "Sieradz"

new name: "259 - Sandomierz"

Code:
capital = "Sandomierz"

new name: "260 - Lublin"

Code:
capital= "Lublin"

new name: "261 - Ruskie"

Code:
capital= "Lwow"

EDIT: Now I have to wait for someone to fix the Oder to make this river look as it should.

Without doubt, Polish setup (st least in demo) is an absurd. Surroundings also (look at Volhynia having 30000+ population and Kiev with about 3000 or something, or "Bessarabia" instead of Moldova).

Given the current province borders it's even hard to work out a consensus on how to get it all back on historical and realistic path. Your proposal is good, IMHO Polish provinces should look like:

Poznańskie (current Poznań)
Kaliskie (Kalisz)
Krakowskie (Kraków)
Ruś Halicka (Ruthenia)
Lubelskie (Galicia)
Mazowsze (Mazovia)
Podlaskie (Podlasia)
Podolskie (Podolia)
Warmia
Kujawy (Płock)
Sandomierskie (Lublin)
Sieradzko-łęczyckie (łódź)
Danzig, hell, let it stay...

I'm aware it's a mixture of geographical regions and administrative voivodships, some from XVI and earlier, some from XVI and later, but one has to do compromises.

The best, if we do not change number of provinces, would be also to redraw Oder river (now separates nowadays' East Germany from the West Germany which is pure absurd) and some borders (cut future Sandomierskie from Silesian regions by extending Krakowskie, extend Mazowsze west to include Płock - a real one, not this in demo map, make Sieradzko-łęczyckie smaller, redo Kaliskie and current Płock to get more or less proper Kujawy ect.).

I was trying to change only those provinces, which had the strangest names, and as I was born in Lublin I didn't like to see my city west of Vistula...

For me one thing is fascinating: how is it possible to make so many mistakes in province names/city names? I understand that someone may have thought that Łódź was always a big, important city in Poland, but putting Uzhhorod (Ungvar) as a capital of Polish province called Ruthenia makes me ask myself: "Have they done any research before drawing this map?"

As to province number - I think there are enough provinces to represent historical changes in this area.

I was mentioning this problem with Oder river many times before, so did other forum members, and perhaps it will be fixed, as it is not hard to do (small change in one .bmp file)...

Aah! There is one more mystery about Polish provinces - Why Poznan and Kalisz are parts of HRE?? :confused:

My question is: Will the changes (concerning province names, HRE membership, the Oder shape) proposed by me and Kristoff be implemented in one of the first patches? Or shall we just make some kind of "real geography" mod?..

I wouldn't count on that much, unless one of devs is your buddy :) Sooner or later somebody will probably compile one sensible Polish-focused mod (maybe from Polish EUFI forum). Otherwise, we can try to fiddle with the files ourselves. I'm right know playing with bmp map - easy and results are indeed seen on the map. Just a note: with such small scale of world map it may seem that painting a single pixel can result in a big change on in-game map. It won't. Needs some more repainting. I just have one problem. I try to change some provinces borders so that they end on rivers. How to merge two maps - with rivers and provinces, so one can actually see where to paint?

Well, I tried to fix the Oder and I get quite a good results, BUT it is not possible to get a river exactly on border - because the border is drawn in the game between pixels of the province bmp file, while rivers are made of pixels, so you can have a river a little left or a little right from the border only...
