Well in short it looks something like this.
-Swedes invade kill a lot of people, they are ^EVIL^.
-Gentry takes Swedish side
-Poland looses a lot of territory, King flees to Silesia.
-Swedes beseige the holy place of Polish faith - the castle of Czestochowa and loose to a few monks and gentrymen. Poles are VERY VERY brave. Swedes are ^EVIL^.
-Swedes start loosing. Anti swedish peasant revolts fight the ^EVIL^ and now ^INCOMPETENT^ Swedes
-Poland Wins, Yay!

Well, most decent books (I`m rather talking about the more recent universitary handbooks and not about Sienkiewicz which is more or less what Jools gave as example) are usually the most boring one`s which never really make it for a translation - actually the only Polish history books I know that have been translated are the most general one`s. So as it often is in historical research the best way to find out the opinions of the other side is just to learn the language...

Try the books of prof. Frost from Scotland. He worked on sources in Poland. Good analyses.
I don't think that some Polish historians were translated but I can give you the several names you can trace in bibliteques if you want.

You can check Norman Davies book, he compares his view to the Polish view in a few chapters.

Ok. I'll check it tomorrow. As for the Norman Davies - he is very good in 20th cen. but I would be very careful about everything he can say about earlier times.

.
'Swedish occupation' is used in the 3rd verse of the anthem but that implies more how great a leader Czarniecki was then how evil the Swedes to my simple understanding of the anthem... i`m sure that the Poles here can explain it better.Originally posted by Wasa
I understand that..hmm..isn´t there even a line in the polish national anthem about the "evil" swedes?

Well, the thought that the Deluge destroyed Poland more than WWI and WWII altogether (at least in terms of trade and industry) is somehow popular here.
Cheers

..well.....they ("evil Swedes") left in ruins quite a number of beautiful castles here. For example Krzyztopór palace. This arch. beauty was built only to be destroyed in few years later by those "barbaric Swedes"
