POLAND
Chapter 53
PRESENT DAY:
LOCATION: THE LONG ISLAND FACILITY
RILEY: Are you sure you want to do this Boss?
WALCOTT: There’s nothing else for us to do. Our main portal has been shut down by the military…now, we’re regulated to using the wayback machine. It’s now or never.
RILEY: What’s the history book for?
WALCOTT: To prove what I say is true. It’s a curious thing really…every time I open it history has changed and not for the best…Britain, Scotland…Ireland now stand alone in our time, but in the mid-eighteen century she’s not alone.
RILEY: What if this Reginald won’t listen?
WALCOTT: HE must…In their time, Poland can still be contained if the world unites against them…and, if they defeat Poland all this will go away.
RILEY: You know…as soon as I start it up…French security will know that the wayback exists. I might not be able to bring you back.
WALCOTT: So, then this is farewell my friend. And, if something does go wrong…save yourself.
1945:
Walcott arrives at 10 Downey Street, London, within the office of Reginald Goodrich's (great grandson to the writer from London Times of the same name). After a brief, but heated exchange between them, Reginald takes the book from Walcott.
WALCOTT: You might not know me...but, I tell you we have met in Casablanca. You traveled there with the use of your time portal. Don't try to deny it's existence. Because you see I have a time portal as well.
GOODRICH: What would you have me do?
WALCOTT: Pay a visit to you great grandfather...and, bring that book along with you. It'll help stop that vile monster Range and his Polish Commanders.
A moment later, Walcott mysteriously disappears into thin air.
1751:
REGINALD: If the British Government does not do something to stop these barbarian, the Polish army will one day march down the streets of London.
FIRST MAN: My dear man…we are aware that most of Europe and the Muslim nation tremble at the very mention of Commanders names…but, you cannot make us believe that this very Island is in jeopardy of invasion.
REGINALD: That’s exactly what I’m saying…If our army does not act immediately to bring our forces back from the new world we are doomed.
The gentlemen in attendance began to sneer at Reginald.
SECOND MAN: And, what of our navy?
TYLER: If I could be so rude…
All eyes turned Tyler’s way.
TYLER: (cont) ...as to interject…I have had the opportunity the last few years to be with the Polish commanders…and, grew tired of their constant wars …And, I do dare say that their army is one if not the best army in the world…and, their navy is growing each day.
REGINALD: What is your name sir?
TYLER: Tyler Moore…
REGINALD: I’d say you have been with the devil sir…
TYLER: I can’t say that you are far from wrong.
Later, after the forum had closed, Reginald and Tyler had a moment to speak alone.
TYLER: What do you know of this man Range?
REGINALD: I was going to ask you the very same question.
TYLER: (strains) I’m going to tell something that is very strange…it stems from something that Evin said referring to Range.
REGINALD: How old would you say Evin is?
TYLER: Why would you ask that?
REGINALD: Because I know what you’re about to say. She doesn’t age…she’s been with Range since the battle of Grunwald.
TYLER: But, that was fought in 1401…(pause) Now, it all it fits…what Evin said…she said that Range was her Great-Grandfather.
REGINALD: And, so he is…
TYLER: Then, all the commanders are immortal?
REGINALD: No…I don’t believe so. But, they don’t age.
TYLER: How can that be…
REGINALD: Oh, a most evil has befallen the world.
Reginald then drew a book from a bag he had at his side. He placed it on the table between them.
REGINALD: (cont) This is a history book of sorts.
As Tyler reached to open it, Reginald placed his hand on the book to keep him momentarily from opening it.
REGINALD: (cont) I must warn you of two things; first, if might read two pages and then go back to read the first, only to find that some of the lines have as if magically changed.
TYLER: And, the second?
REGINALD: It tells of the future…a future that I’m afraid is changing and not for best…
Tyler was the allowed to open the book. He suddenly turned pale when he not only noticed Reginald’s name he also saw his name written in the book.
The very words that Tyler wrote only an hour before were found in the book.
TYLER: Where did you get this book?
REGINALD: A family member gave it to me…he was a time traveler from the future. The problem is the book is changing…
TYLER: Why are they here…the Polish Commanders?
REGINALD: Isn’t it obvious…their writing a new history.
Reginald’s niece then brought a British officer to their table.
NIECE: Excuse me uncle…but, a Major Bainbridge would like a word with you.
MAJOR BAINBRIDGE: I’m very sorry to bother you two gentlemen, but I was present at this evening’s discussion. It's not public knowledge, but in the last few days, our government allowed 40,000 Polish troops to land in Ireland.
REGINALD: Under what pretense did they ask admittance to Ireland?
MAJOR BAINBRIDGE: Their ships had been damaged and they needed a safe port...seeing we have given them military access...
Tyler began reading…
REGINALD: Are they still there?
MAJOR BAINBRIDGE: It’s not common knowledge except on the Isle that they are there…of course, rest assured there’s no reason to worry…under the articles by which we allowed the Polish rights of passage into our land…they cannot initiate a war with us
Tyler sadly looked up from the book.
TYLER: But, they could force Britain to declare war on them…by Poland declaring war on Britain’s ally…Lan Na…
REGINALD: And, did they?
TYLER: Sometime today…
REGINALD: And, with us being who we are…we are obligated to defend our allies…
Reginald then leaned forward to ask the Major the ultimate question.
REGINALD: (cont) Major…would it give away military secrets if you were to tell us who has more soldiers on Britain Islands…Us or the Poles?
MAJOR BAINBRIDGE: It’s no secret sir…we’ve been pulling troops out of these islands for years…we’re down to the bone with twenty partial regiments; the best being line infantry.
TYLER: (stutters) But…the majority of the Polish troops are White Coats…while ours are line infantry.
PRESENT TIME:
Location: BACK UP LINE, Long Island...fifty miles east from New Paris, New France (formerly Manhattan, New York):
When Walcott returned from the eighteenth century…he was met by the French Police.
Walcott looked at Riley.
Riley hung his head down.
CAPTAIN MONTELLE: Louis Walcott?
WALCOTT: That would be me…
CAPTAIN MONTELLE: You’re under arrest.
WALCOTT: On what charge?
CAPTAIN MONTELLE: Treason against the French Government of New France.
WALCOTT: I do not recognize the New French order to be in charge of the new world as long as the free world still exists.
CAPTAIN MONTELLE: There is no hope to undo what has taking place...that is why we are destroying this machine. And, once we locate and remove the final threat (Poland's portal) our reign will last forever...no chance of undoing what is now...(to his men) Take them away.
