Poland
Chapter 40
The Polish Army in Gondwana.
When word arrived in Warsau that Range had taken Gondwana, there was utter disbelief.
GORSKI: Why in the world would Range do that…he’s completely cut off from not Poland but the entire world?
THE PALACE IN GONDWANA:
Captain Spangler (newly promoted) came to Range to give him the bad news.
CAPTAIN SPANGLER: We have nearly spent all our shot and we’re completely out of gun powder.
RANGE: What’s our chances of getting supplies?
CAPTAIN SPANGLER: Not very good…we’re not liked…no one will be allowed passage short of going to war to bring us supplies.
Sergeants Nowak and Czerwinski entered the room where Range and Captain Spangler were speaking. They were bringing a missionary named Edwards from Great Britain into see Range.
RANGE: I thought I told you guys not to disturb me unless it was important.
NOWAK: It is Range…we found this missionary chained up in dungeon.
The Missionary’s name was Edwards. He was from Great Britain.
RONALD EDWARDS
RANGE: All right…I’ll speak to him in a moment
Range then turned his attention back to Spangler.
RANGE: (cont) Spangler…see what you can do to get supplies.
Spangler left.
RANGE: What do we have here?
NOWAK: I thought you’d want to see him…he and his family were prisoners of the Gondwana government.
RANGE: Let me get this straight…you brought your family here…why?
EDWARDS: To spread the word…you might say missionaries are somewhat similar to soldiers...we all march off to war.
RANGE: Well, that might be so…but, at the moment I’d rather be marching off to somewhere else, and I’d take that as a hint to take my family and head for the hills as quickly as I can.
EDWARDS: I’ll do no such thing. My flock is here and I won’t leave them
RANGE: Well, that’s up to you…but, if you haven’t hear my army is out of supplies…all we have to defend ourselves are the rocks on the ground that we can throw at the enemy.
EDWARDS: Maybe it’s time to learn the art of slingshots.
RANGE: Very funny…
EDWARDS: I didn’t mean it to be. You’re a soldier. You’ll use whatever is at your disposal to defend and defeat the enemy. I’m a soldier too…I’m armed with the word and faith.
RANGE: That’s fine…but, if I were you I’d scadattle while the getting is good. We can’t protect you and your family...we can hardly defend ourselves.
EDWARDS: WE’ve come here to save the people of Gondwana…
RANGE: Well, maybe they don’t want to be saved, seeing we found you in the dungeon.
EDWARDS: I was cast in the dungeon by the former regime which you overthrew.
RANGE: Well, that regime might find themselves back on the throne unless I can have some supplies flown in here…
EDWARDS: (beat) Fly…Bats have wings…
RANGE: That crack about flying was only in jest…
EDWARDS: What would you say if I could help you with your powder shortage…could we stay then under your protection of course?
RANGE: If you’re going to stand there and tell me that with the right combination of Bat dropping, sulfur and charcoal you can make gun powder I’d say you have a few screws loose.
EDWARDS: That might be so…but, if I could do it…look there’s plenty of bats about…sulfur and charcoal is plentiful as well.
RANGE: Look…I don’t know why you’d consider helping…but, even if you could pull this off without blowing yourself up mind you…just much powder do you think you can make in say two hours? I say two hours because I know the combination needed and the amount of gun powder you get for all your hard work.
EDWARDS: I’m still willing to try.
RANGE: Well…If you’re crazy enough to try I have the men to help…be my guest.
During the next seventy-two hours…Range’s army under the direction of Edwards went to work in making gun powder and melting metal to form shot.
Kucharski and Sawicki did complain as they noticed that their pots, as well as spoons, fork and knives were disappearing. Some pots disappeared were taken with fixings already in them.
SAWICKI: Hey…Kucharski did you see the big potbelly pot I had over here?
Suddenly, Kucharski began to chase after a man that just took the pot he was preparing a meal in.
KUCHARSKI: Come back here!
On the morning of third day, there was a huge explosion. Range didn’t jump…the bangs had been going off every so often. But, this particular bang was soon followed by a very bad odor that filled the air.
RANGE: (moans) SOMEONE…someone please tell me they did not just blow up my latrine?
NEAR THE LATRINE:
CZERWINSKI: I think this is our best batch so far…
EDWARDS: (beat) Quite…
BACK IN THE PALACE:
Captain Spangler came to Range with good news.
CAPTAIN SPANGLER: Range…I have just learned that the French left a quantity of shot, powder and muskets in a small village in Deccan, near our border.
RANGE: Are you certain of this?
CAPTAIN SPANGLER: A reliable source…
RANGE: IT could still be a trap. But, if it’s not I certainly do not want those arms and powder to fall into the wrong hands. Do you know the location of this village?
ANHAEA, POLAND:
Back in Poland in the province of Anhaea, Gorski was putting together a relief force.
GORSKI: If I know Range he’ll fight to the sea.
ALINA: To put together a sizable army will take time.
Right at that moment an army of eight Gustavian infantry regiments were passing.
GORSKI: Halt…where are you headed?
REGIMENT COMMANDER: Guards for…
GORSKI: Never mind…you and your men are coming with me on a little boat ride…(to Alina) Well, I’ve got my army…a combined force of Gustavian infantry and cavalry…12,000 strong.
JUST ACROSS THE DECCAN BORDER:
Range knew the only way he could enter Deccan was to declare war on the single province kingdom. The plan was a two prong attack…Captain Spangler with the main force would face off against the Deccan field troops. Range and the one-hundred would descend on the town and capture the French supplies.
War had been declared against Deccan. Deccan's ally the declared war on Poland.
Just across the Deccan border was the small village that held barrows of gunpowder and shot, along with hundreds of muskets. But, Range’s luck appeared to have run out. For no sooner had Range and the one hundred found the stash…an alarm went out.
RANGE: No time to run boys. We’ll make a stand here. I need a volunteer to go for help.
NOWAK: I’ll go Range.
There were a few anxious minutes as Nowak skillfully slipped away. Once he made it into the clearing he made a mad dash toward Spangler's forces. There was no time to waste. He had to return in time with reinforcements to save his comrades.
CZERWINSKI: If anyone can make it…it’s Nowak.
Range wasn’t sure what Czerwinski said as the world began to spin…a moment later Range collapsed unconscious onto the floor of the building.
Even with the muskets, powder and shot the position the one-hundred found themselves in was not good. After two hours, they had put up a amazing fight, but the Deccan troops were planning on an all out attack.
Just as the Deccan troops were breaking through and over the barricades of the building, the relief force arrived to save the day,
Range, still unconscious was taken back to Gondwana. Immediately, when Edwards saw the swelling, he knew Range had been gravely injured. He surmised that Range had at one time or another had taken a terrible blow to the back of the skull…and he prescribed a very long rest for Range.
It seemed that the blow Range received on the back of his skull (after the battle of Algarve, Castille) had caused some serious damage…and only now the full effect of the blow was making itself known
As for the war...after Captain Spangler had finished off the Deccan field forces, he stormed its fort.
No sooner had Deccan fallen...Poland and Maharashra agreed on a white peace.
