well, I dont believe this could really happen, but it is not that unrealistic as some people may think.
Primo, in that period of history, Poland was one of most tollerant places on earth ( yeah, I know everybody thinks we were always ultracatholic). All kinds of different religions found their asylum here.
Secundo, reformed community was really strong in 17 century, e.g. lots of calvins among aristocracy ( see swedish invasion, they found lots of friendly foes in P-L).
Tertio, we had a bad habbit of electing weak monarchs, shall we had by mistake one strong king, nobody knows which direction Poland would go.
So, I defenitely wouldnt call your decision 'strange'.
Btw if not one stupid, too ambitious bastard who broke treaty with Turks ( see war against Turks in 1444 and battle of Warna) we could have faitfull and strong ( and definetely far from being 'catholic'

) ally, helpfull to sort out that mess we had later on.
