Game as Poland... (1.9)

I thought about starting a game playing Poland... I haven't tried them before, so I thought that it could be nice. (I've played Brandenburg-Prussia and Moskowy-Russia before).

I plan to avoid the devastating events that makes Poland into an Aristocracy (and a piecemeal for its neighboors).

I want to wait for the union with Lithuania to happen. I notice that Poland just have Polish culture until then.

Should I go for the Balcans? What should I do with Germany? What about Austria and Hungary? They are my friends now, should I seek to conquer them? What about Russia and the Horde?

I'm not sure what are smart things to do playing Poland, as they will lose out in the tech raise after getting orthodox techs during the 16th century. Is a big alliance, consisting of Lithuania, Hungary and Bohemia something I should try? I've seen the AI doing that all the time - and it can be a bit annoying when I'm playing the OE, and want an easy time taking down Hungary...



I've also considered playing Venie, trying to get all Italian, Slavonic and Greek provinces under my umbrella.

Pretty basic IMHO. Conquer Balticum, then it's straightforward into the HRE. MNuch richer provinces there compared to East and South. You can grab pieces of the Balkan though when you get the opportunity... Don't go eastwards though as there's too many orthodox provinces IMHO.

And that brings me a question for everyone: Has anyone tried Lithuania? They are quite big in the 15th/16th centuries. And what happens if you don't accept the union w/ Poland?

I haven't tried 'em but AFAIK you get some Mikolaj Radziwill who apparently was an enemy to the Commonwealth as king if you refuse... Then you'll get his children.

I'm not entirely sure, but it's quite possible that if you become Poland as Pomerania (AGCEEP only I think), you MIGHT be able to have Polish AND German cultures. I'm not sure if they keep the double cultures in the switch, though...

If you want it historically too you should try to establish the Oder as the border to Germany and annex annything east, expansion into Russia may be tempting too. And dont forget to push the ottomans back.

Take Danzig away from the Teutons (or Prussia in Vanilla) ASAP. It'll become a CoT soon enough and will cripple your greatest rival for many years. As Poland you can't allow the Knights to get up to speed.

I'll try to establish a German border on the Oder, but I'm tempted to take Mecklenburg at least...

I will probably have to beat Russia back, but I'll try to help my Lithuanians to annex big parts of it before I annex them (historically) in the 1560s. The Baltic will also be mine.

Conserning the Ottomans, I'm not sure if to befriend the Hungarians or not. Maybe I should seek friendship with them early, on, to avoid any unpleasant Ottoman incursions in northeastern Europe, but I'm not sure if I want a big Habsburg Austria, as they inherit Hungary et al. during the 16th century. Austria may quickly turn against me, as they did historically - unless I choose them as my ally...

Together, Poland and Austria could rule Germany and Eastern Europe...



Yeah, I'm eager to take Danzig, and to limit those pescy German Knights.

Also vassalized both denmark-sweden and annexed them right after i annexed Lithuania via event. Now i just vassalized Austria and will soon DA them as well - all while trying to avoid getting past the BB limit.

Oh, and i currently got a direct border with France and the Netherlands.

Not really insane. A WC is way worst.

Actually, i did not want to expand much in Germany, and keep to the traditional Polish-Lithuanian provinces together with Bohemia and big portion of Hungary. But after being dowed by both Sweden and Denmark (the OE joined later), and having Stefan Batory kicking around, i decided to teach them all a lesson by vassalizating em. Sadly, the OE is Shiite (yes, shiite, they took the wrong option on a wierd event) and i cannot DA them.

But now that i heard that i can keep German culture with Pommern, i have to try it out. Time for a Polish-Lithuanian-Germano-Scandinavian Commonwealth.
