I'm just coming back to the game after buying the last three DLC's and I've learned quite a bit in the last week, at least I thought I had. I used my spies on Poland and France and I was able to get the collaboration up to 100% in both. Poland fell so quickly I didn't even get to enjoy the attack, and I thought I would just walk on over and do the same to France. Nope! I attacked right around mid-1940, and I had 3 x 24 divisions of (infantry + 2 artillery) = 20 width + 5 types of support (field hospital, engineer, scout, anti-tank, anti-air), and I had a little over a million enlisted total. Playing on the easy level while I learn and I was good on research, too.
I took 1 x 24 infantry and 1 x 3 panzer division up to Denmark and took that, then I naval invaded Norway. I had to wait to attack France, because I had not finished the focus that takes you around the Maginot Line, and The Netherlands ended up declaring war on me when I hit Denmark.
I positioned my 2 x 24 infantry / artillery divisions against The Netherlands border and I started the attack. My goodness, the attack went nowhere, and for the first time since I started playing I saw a bunch of red cones pointing at my troops, and the small line below each general started turning gray, indicating I was facing a superior force. It turns out that France sent a bunch of troops into Belgium, along with England, and they all bottlenecked on The Netherlands border.
There wasn't much space to line my troops up and attack, and I remember thinking to myself that I should have used artillery on Norway, and the Panzers on The Netherlands. Still, I'm not used to my troops being run over that way, especially when I had a good Field Marshall, and excellent generals for the job. Plus, I had updated them with all the medals that I could.
So what happened? Do I need 40 width divisions for both infantry and Panzers, or was it that I tried to squeeze all my 48 divisions into a space that was too small? I am used to attacking The Netherlands and Belgium together, and spreading my troops out a bit.
In the middle of the stalemate, my faction friends sent me some troops and I started to barely move the line as it widened out a bit, but then the Soviet Union made a war claim and came walking right in. No chance. Suggestions? I've just never had any issues with France or the in-between countries when I played a couple years ago, though I think I did lead with my Panzers.
