As the title says what is the point of heavy cruisers? I usually do not bother with them but recently have started experimenting with them as Germany and the USA.

I use them because they are cheap and quick to build and they are good enough to sink the navies of every nation in the game except for USA/UK/Japan.

And those annoying small fleets of 1 DD or 2 subs etc the allies scatter around everywhere.

Want in invade Australia and New Zealand in 1940 as Germany or Canada? Well that is one way to do it. My mini SAG.

Under a rear admiral. Also rear admirals level fast if you have them do things like raid conveys etc.

Heavy cruisers are very valued by the player that realizes how important it is to have gunships in a CTF to soak up hits. Instead of your CVs getting hit, let the enemy spend many of his shots on your (usually) BBs that are part of a mixed carrier fleet. But the problem is that - at any given time - the BBs are always too slow for the current equivalent CV. And most payers will not tolerate having their CTFs slowed down... preferring instead a strategy of "fast to hit, fast to run if you encounter large enemy mixed CTF with BBs - because sticking around to slug it out means your CVs will get trashed.

Now enters the value of the modern CA. Very fast with near same speed as the equivalent CV means it won't slow the fleet but packs along vitally needed org to soak up hits.
