I was inspecting an all-AI test game and was shocked, shocked to run across this:

But as we all know, Pluto is rightfully a planet. NASA agrees:

Let's fix this, PDX.

Literally unplayable broken game without this fix, thank you. Anyone got a mod for this?

Pluto is a planet. Who's with me?

Pluto is smaller than Russia by surface area. If Pluto is a planet then so are Ceres, Eris, Haumea, and Makemake, also probibly Quaoar, Sedna, Orcus, 2007 OR10, Salacia, 2002 MS4 and 10 Hygiea.

So no, not with you.

Pluto is not accepted as a planet anymore by the IAU. It is classified as a dwarf planet, as it is not sufficiently gravitational strong to dominate its own orbit, instead just being part of the broader Kuiper belt without such "clearing of the orbit" as its sometimes referred to as.

The eight official planets are capable of such dominance.

IAU is a bunch of killjoy wankers in an ivory tower nitpicking about some arbitrary gravitational cutoff that they recently changed. the IAU's president and general secretary don't even study planets, they study galaxies!

NASA has actually sent humans to another celestial body.

either way, I see "planet" in that name. so let's call it for what it is, a planet. you can nitpick about what type of planet later.

Carl Sagan would approve.

Pluto is a planet.

You know what Sagan would have said about dogmatically refusing to adapt one's understanding in face of new evidence?

Science moves, it adapts it tests and discards that which does not survive the test. That's why it's useful!

You're not doing Sagan's memory any good turning his attempt to explain science into an article of dogma.

What type of object we decide to call Pluto is the least interesting thing about Pluto. Most astronomers (even those in planetary science) are extremely unconcerned with the question of its planetary status.

Pluto is a Dwarf Planet. It is absolutely infested with dwarves. By ancient dvergar law, treating Pluto as a planet is considered an implicit claim on dwarven territory by the people of Earth, and could potentially lead to war. Please stop these topics unless you want to cause an interplanetary incident.

It isn't big enough to be a planet, and if we classified it as one, we would have to suddenly reclassify a ton of other celestial bodies as planets too.

It's especially funny to me how many people act so affronted that Pluto isn't considered a planet now as if it always was. Pluto was only classified as a planet in like 1930, and before that there were multiple other bodies that were classified as planets that were also reclassified and nobody cares. It's like people who think the Confederacy is their heritage when it lasted 4 years, guys it's just a blip on the radar.

most importantly, we all agree it is NOT an asteroid. it's a type of planet.

hence, stellaris has a bug to fix

On a serious note, it would be nice if Paradox added dwarf planets to the game so that Pluto and Ceres could be properly represented.

I mean out of all the features in the universe I'd want them to spend dev time on that's . . . . uh, probably not even in my top 10,000? Nice to have, sure? But you probably aren't going to come back to the game after a break away from it and start a new run just because they relabled a couple of asteroids as dwarf planets. That's just more mod territory imo, and I'm pretty sure there already are tons of mods that do that
