Plug and Play Help (Please do not move this thread!)

I posted this here because I don't have access to the OT forum, and no one really reads the Tech Support forum.

Mods, please don't move it until I can fix this!

Besdies, if I don't get it fixed, I won't be able to play Rome! :D

Anyway...

I just cleaned my registry, and obviously, me being me, didn't back it up. The problem is, my device manager and network connections are now totally blank. The internet is working fine (wireless), as is MSN. I think I've narrowed the problem down to Plug and Play. The problem is, when I go into services (start --> run --> services.msc) and double click on Plug and Play, it says: "Configuration Manager: The Plug and Play service or another required service is not available."

So, my sound doesn't work, I expect my video doesn't work. I'm just glad my keyboard & mouse do. What the hell do I do? How can I repair Plug and Play?

Oh man, I knew I should have backed up...

Ahh, probably not. I'm not one for restoring. Then again, this is the first time (IIRC) that I've cleaned my registry. The main problem appears to be the P&P... :(

(good news! Rome is down to £17.99 on Amazon - it's what, £32 on GG?? - and I've just ordered an OEM version of Vista x64 Ultimate. I'd still like to fix XP x64, though...)

I'd advise you to try it...

in msconfig have you the opportunity to check in Services the "UPnP peripheric host" (badly translated from my french Windows) ?

in the Computer Management box, in Services and Applications, Services, can you run the plug and play Service ?

First, right click on My computer and choose Manage
There, go to "services and applications" and "services"
Find the plug and play service and with right-click try to Run it (I see on my xp that I can't stop mine so I guess you won't be able to run yours, but who knows...)

Second, if it was not successful, you were right about the button to restore to a previous point.
Click on it, follow the instructions and look on the proposed calendar if you have a previous restoration point.
Check that it is earlier than the modifications. Restore to this point.

Third if not successful, reinstall Windows.

Fourth... take this rope...

;)

I would advise you to create a restoration point before meddling with anything more or less important such as destroying the registry base or installing EU:Rome :eek:o

The first doesn't work, as mentioned above.

The second, I tried, and I thought it would work. The restore bar went across, the PC shut down, and I got as far as putting my password in on the startup screen, at which point I was told that restoration had failed. :(

So, re-install Windows it is. I shall await my new OEM copy of Vista x64, and hope I don't manage to trash that too soon... :D

Thanks a lot for your help, hildoceras.

My suggestion if this is Windows XP, then search for rstrui.exe and use a restore point to an early date. You won't loose any data, but rather just programs you installed etc.

Windows XP Pro x64. And thanks, I'll try those suggestions. :)
