I can sum up the fatal flaw of a lot of the attitudes in this thread pretty easily:

Your desire to play Paradox's games while giving them as little of your money as possible is not somehow inherently more noble than Paradox's desire to take as much of your money as possible while giving you their games.

Yes, I haven't been spending money on Expansions AND DLC!!!! Still means I don't have to agree with day-one DLC.

Assumptions assumptions

Hrm... I won't spend money on DLC's that just add graphics, but I've bought plenty that add functionality to the game. They've all been under $20 so its not really a stretch to buy them.

Free things are nice! I myself am a person who enjoys free things. You know what isn't free though? Living expenses. Unfortunately, the people at Paradox being people and all, have these living expenses.

If I let the devs sleep on my couch, and share my Cheerios, can I get the dlc for free? ;)

I prefer expansions TBH. I don't like the salami slicing that you get with DLC. For example, the spritepacks for EU3. I think there were around 7 pacls in total, all of which had to be bought individually. Rather cheap, until you add them all toghether. I don't really mind, I won't get worked up about it. After all it's my choice if I buy, and nobody elses. If I don't like it I won't buy it and if I do I will. I'm much happier with expansions though as they are more substantial.

Team Fortress 2 is making a lot of money by giving away patches which could have been sold as DLCs or expansions so it is a viable business model to do so.

It is?

Well, I guess all those "pre-order this game, get HATS!" things rack up money.

And comparing developers that practically speaking have money prints (Valve with Steam, Blizzard with WoW etc) to other companies is bit... uninformed, IMO.

Why are you talking about steam? Team Fortress 2 has nothing to do with steam. They make their money off purchases from their store. The hats for preorders is only a very small part of the profits from team fortress 2. Also valve doesnt use steam to bankroll team fortress, tf2 generates a lot of revenue itself. You seem to be very misinformed.

Yeah, me too.
But it was told that there is the possibility to make "bundled DLC-Packs" available which
sounds like addons. For me it's less important how it's called than what is inside. I'd be glad to
start a shitstorm with you guys but I need a cause for this. There where 2 minor DLCs untill now
and they were free, so I don't understand the rage at this point.

On the other hand Para should have known that words like "DLC" and "STEAM" aren't popular
at all because there are still some people that remember times when you pushed in a disk and
played right away without third-party-software, online-activation and overpriced additional content.

I hope I'm right but only time will tell how this will develop in future.

Oh yeah, forgot the ingame store.

Somehow I only remembered it going F2P, not the store stuff.

Which I find strange, as, IMO, Steam is just so much cheaper and easier.

I want quality games, so Paradox please just charge what you need to keep making them. If that is more than the latest FPS I am totally fine with that.

The problem is, I think, that DLC is in general a code word for less content for more money. Now, I'm not saying that it necessarily applies to Paradox, because Paradox have made great games, but I do think the DLC concept is designed to rip off customers with the selling of fancy armours, extra shields, etc etc. Low quality content for a bunch of dollars. Case in point.

that DLC is in general a code word for less content for more money
I allways thought it was Doubleprice Less Content.

I totally agree that games like EU3(+Addons) cannot be expected to be released at €40 and Paradox as
a company cannot release games at the initial price of €150 because no one of the mainstream guys would buy it.
I don't care if it's 40€ + 4 DLCs 5€ each or 40€ + 1 Addon costing 20€ but the sum should be the same.

I allways thought it was Doubleprice Less Content.

OTOH, not all people place the same value on certain aspects of a product. Breaking that product into chunks that appeal to different people can result in a higher number of sales and potentially revenues. Your "less content" could well be someone else's holy grail.

For example, I never bought any of the civ "expansions" that were just scenario packs because I never played scenarios other than the grand campaign, other people did so the publisher made some money. I know people that would go bat**** crazy to pay for an editor that let them customise what their character looks like to the last pixel in WoW and others who can't be bothered to use the new appearance system because they don't care about looks, let alone pay extra for it.

DLC is a lot better response to these sorts of preferences than requiring someone to pay for a full expansion that adds 1 thing the person wants and 5 they don't.

lmao I remember those too! We had a Radioshack one and my father coded Star Trek onto the tape. Used to have to load it numerous times before it'd finally load.

It's funny how perspective changes things, ain't it? I remember back in the early 90s when the internet was nothing but a plaything and the best modem you could buy was a 14.4k baud. We thought it was lightning speed when 56k came out.

To think that in just, what, 20 years we've gone from that to what it is today. The complaints raise on the boards comes from either 1.) being unwilling or scared of change, or 2.) inexperienced or unaware of the past and how good we have it today.

Traditional way:
1. I really want to play game x.
2. Lets find those CDs.
2e. Oh, CDs were lost / are in that cardboard box in the cellar.
3. Insert CD into tray.
3e. Oh, the CD is scratched. Too bad.
4. Start install.
5. Change CDs if applicable.
6. Redo steps 2-5 for any expansions.
7. Find patch(es) from somewhere. Curse broken links and all other hindrances of web.
8. Install patches.
9. Play.

Steam method:
1. I really want to play game x.
2. Start installing the game and any expansions.
(3. Write this post)
4. Play.

Speaking about what I know, EU3, the only DLC has been totally avoidable bling for unit sprites that has no effect whatsoever on gameplay. PI have committed that gameplay stuff will be patched for free as normal, and optional features (eg playing CK2 as a Muslim) only will be DLC and will be entirely compatible in MP play with those who choose not to buy any DLC. How you get from that to being sure PI are plotting to rip you off I can't begin to imagine.

Steam method:
1. I really want to play game x.
2. Start installing the game and any expansions.
(3. Write this post)
4. Play.
Gamersgate Method:
1. Download game
2. The game is actually your property, you can mod, burn on CD/DVD/USB-Stick/Very much Floppy Disks etc.
3. Enjoy.

See, I don't play vanilla games for long. I play mods. My own mods.
And if I f* want to play patch 1.3 then I don't download Patch 1.4.
And believe me or not, I got PCs where I don't have Internet Access. For real.
