Hello,

The character ambition system is nice in concept, but fails miserably in execution.

Firstly, the fact that you can gain stat points by fulfilling them is incredibly powerful, given the fact that you can get them 10x more than through events or marriages. Spamming appointments that fulfill ambitions can get you some real supermen.

Secondly, there is no penalty for rapidly hiring/firing people. There is a relationship modifier, but it was small enough that it never really meant anything.

Thirdly, the interface for it is extremely poor. In some screens, characters have that little fist icon on their portrait to show they have an ambition, in others they do not. For instance, the 'court' tab, which presumably would be the best place to find these folks, does not display the icons. This makes you use the character list, in which there is no way to separate those in your court from others. This makes it that once you have many vassals, it's next to impossible to identify those within your own court that have ambitions.

As things stand now, all it adds to the game is a lot of extra pointless clicking, because I end up playing like this:

When I start, small court, I appoint all the time to get the insane stat boosts. These supermen (who are of my own clan if possible) then become my first vassals, and the power of having 5 supermen producing at least partially super children means your dynasty will always have a ton of high stat folks around in it.

Then, once I have more than say 3 or 4 vassals, it starts getting hard to find out who in which court wants what. So I stop paying attention to them at all. When one of them completes a project, I rotate each of my 5 highest guys of the particular stat for a day each, rinse repeat because it just isn't worth the effort to drill down, but I still don't want to miss out on the free stats.

TLDR:

Balance rate of stat gain from ambitions with that of events

Create consequences for playing musical chairs with advisor appointments

Fix 'my court' and 'character' interfaces so the information needed to interact w this system is available

Link events or other things in it to branch out the system. Ex: ambition to become a kokujin. Ambition to marry into clan leaders family. Ambition to have clan go to war with your personal enemies, stuff like this.

I didn't think they got ambitions so quick they became superman as fast as you say. After fulfilling my courtiers ambitions, they didn't get another one for a long time for most of them. I'll keep an eye on the rate at which they get them, but right now I don't bother messing with all of them as it's such a pain in the butt to check them all.

The character interface needs some navigation love, for sure. Sweet sweet 'back to previous character window' button would help immensely.

They get them a -ton-. You will typically have from 2-4 people with an ambition for each position if your court has a healthy population (which it typically will at start). The boost they get depends on the position; Diplo for Ceremonies, Martial for Arms, Intrigue for Guard.

Fulfilling the master of the guard is trivial, whenever someone gets an ambition, pull him off ninja recruiting, fulfill the ambition by switching for 1 day, send him back. It's a bit harder for Ceremonies and Arms because the projects take longer. Fear not. At the completion of each project, do a round of switching everyone in for a day, you lose ~15 game days (but a lot of pointless clicking) to get the bonuses, then start your next project.

Over their lifetimes, this will add up to at least +6-7 in the relevant stat for whatever ambition they develop. They can also have ambitions for multiple posts. This really does add up to supermen when you factor in lifetime development + wife bonuses. It's not uncommon for me at all to have literally more characters than I can ever appoint with stats like 17/12/14 and other ridiculous totals.

You mentioned you don't bother messing with all of them because it's such a pain to check them all. That was one of the main points of the original post lol. And believe me, if you DO bother messing with them all even though its a pain, you will see the supermen I described pretty quickly heh.

Yeah, now that I've watched it closely on my latest game, they do tend to get another ambition quickly. The problem is that the only type of ambition in the game, so far, is for the three court positions. :(

I kinda liked the ambitions in EU Rome. It was nice trying to keep some of my underlings happy by fulfilling their wishes, and seeing them slowly get angry if I wouldn't give them what they wanted. But there needs to be more ambitions than just the Master positions for things to be spread out.

It looks like they intended on having a full set of varied character ambitions, as in EU Rome, but they only have the ones for the three court positions in & working right now. Obviously that throws off the rate at which their stats can be increased, since most ambitions are simple "have a child", or "attack/ally this nearby clan" which only end up giving a happiness/relations bonus for that character most of the time (and not near so many attribute bonuses). Hopefully this is on the "to do" list for finishing up. The court position ones shouldn't be popping up too often.

Id love to see them really wish to become something else other than the 3 court officials... ask me to marry someone in particular or go to war and such.
We need the NPC to be alive otherwise the court is just a list of names... zombies waiting for you to do everything.

If someone's ambition is not fulfilled the court member should be willing to leave... that's also how to improve chances of invite to clan event working.

Dont know if it is a bug or not but well, ambition like breaking free from the clan appear on the character screen filtered out for plots.

In general, there's too few positions. There's too little to do with the court.

I agree. Would be nice to have a few more posts/ranks you could hand out.
For example military tiltes you could hand out to your vassals , these would give a small relation boost and maybe +1 martial for the vassal.

I think those are just fine. History has many incapable people who wanted to lead armies, and be war leaders.

Which reminds me.. "Become General" is another that's missing.

Also: I'd prefer that, once more ambitions are in the game, that each character's ambition is listed on their pop-up tooltip so we don't have to navigate to their character page and check a tooltip there.

There's a good amount of stuff from Vae Victus that could be brought over that would help with expanding and making use of the court.
