Hello,
The character ambition system is nice in concept, but fails miserably in execution.
Firstly, the fact that you can gain stat points by fulfilling them is incredibly powerful, given the fact that you can get them 10x more than through events or marriages. Spamming appointments that fulfill ambitions can get you some real supermen.
Secondly, there is no penalty for rapidly hiring/firing people. There is a relationship modifier, but it was small enough that it never really meant anything.
Thirdly, the interface for it is extremely poor. In some screens, characters have that little fist icon on their portrait to show they have an ambition, in others they do not. For instance, the 'court' tab, which presumably would be the best place to find these folks, does not display the icons. This makes you use the character list, in which there is no way to separate those in your court from others. This makes it that once you have many vassals, it's next to impossible to identify those within your own court that have ambitions.
As things stand now, all it adds to the game is a lot of extra pointless clicking, because I end up playing like this:
When I start, small court, I appoint all the time to get the insane stat boosts. These supermen (who are of my own clan if possible) then become my first vassals, and the power of having 5 supermen producing at least partially super children means your dynasty will always have a ton of high stat folks around in it.
Then, once I have more than say 3 or 4 vassals, it starts getting hard to find out who in which court wants what. So I stop paying attention to them at all. When one of them completes a project, I rotate each of my 5 highest guys of the particular stat for a day each, rinse repeat because it just isn't worth the effort to drill down, but I still don't want to miss out on the free stats.
TLDR:
Balance rate of stat gain from ambitions with that of events
Create consequences for playing musical chairs with advisor appointments
Fix 'my court' and 'character' interfaces so the information needed to interact w this system is available
Link events or other things in it to branch out the system. Ex: ambition to become a kokujin. Ambition to marry into clan leaders family. Ambition to have clan go to war with your personal enemies, stuff like this.
