I've added this request to the first post in the debug reporting thread, as well as a notice later on in the thread, but I thought I'd better add it as an extra thread here just to draw your attention to it.

Could you please try to make a note of whether there was an active crusade at the time that you experience a CTD when saving (manual or auto) and/or whether there was a lot of hostile non-coreligionist activity going on in the months leading up to the save. I have a suspicion that some (most? all?) of these crashes related to a "landless ruler" existing at the time that the save is written. This would be someone who has lost all of his demesne provinces during a war and has not yet either been able to revoke a vassal's title or been otherwise purged from the game.

More details are in the debug thread...

Thanks.

C.

Also...

I you've already made a crash report in the April 8th thread and are certain that you know that a crusade was active then you could edit your post to include that info. If you aren't certain then please don't do the edit. It's better for us to get no information than faulty/uncertain information.

Would it be useful if we engineered a situation of a landless liege?

For instance wait for a crusade to activate, besiege all the demense except one province of a Muslim ruler. Wait until december; start to siege the final province; wait until december 29th, pause; trigger a event giving us the province; let the autosave kick in.

Would this be an okay test, or would the situation be too artificial to help?

I'm pretty sure that I've seen landless lieges stick around for several years while I had yearly autosave on, with no CTDs.

Yeah...if you felt like running some tests, that would be useful. If you can set it up with a manual save that's a little while (a couple months) before this and then run a bunch of tests to see how your crash rate compares then that might help. It might be that only a certain limited number of times - or very special circumstance - dictate when this crash occurs. It might be a case where there is no vassal for him to usurp, or possibly only when there is one, or...

Blech....I don't know and am probably only grasping at straws. I would just *love* to find out what's causing it and then fix it so we don't have this save game crash issue any longer.

I had answered to your request in the debug thread, but probably it is better to keep the discussion here. So, I repeat it:

I have seen that situation, i.e. a landless ruler who still got a Duke title, during my game on Saturday. I was fighting the Prince of Kiev and took his only demesne province and the Prince of Kiev title from him in a peace treaty, but he still held the Prince of Galich title and still had 3 count vassals. I made an immediate save without problem, and then waited for some weeks to see if he would revoke some vassal's title. As nothing happened, I saved again (without problems), and re-load the earlier save to see if that would cause problems. As the game re-loaded fine, I decided to end the situation by killing the old Prince with the die cheat, and his son (one of his remaining vassals) inherited the Principality and now also had a demesne province.

If it is of interest, I might still have a save of the situation after peace, i.e. with the landless Prince of Galich around, but I have to check tonight

As the save didn't cause any problems, it might not be of much use except to indicate that the landless ruler does not cause a CTD in all situations.
