I understand the screenshots are still WIP but from what I gathered battles will show one vs one sprite like a bunker vs bunker battle.

The game sholuld have much bigger scale of the sprites with armies and small planes etc ducking it out. You can make the sprites smaller but more numerous.

One of the references you can have for example is the "R.E.D. Xtreme" for Civ 5 which makes the sprites smaller but more numerous.

We have a tremendous potential to make this work out really well with the massive world system being built but I fear it will still be a simple 1 vs 1 fights removing much of the immersion for the grand scale we want

PS: The devastation graphics looks cool on the map though. Hopefully it can also be modded.
And please add devastation to the cities themselves too! Make the houses destroyed or burning

I do agree with that. I have long longed for graphical up-to-date uniforms with Victoria 3. Before the big news that we won't get any soldiers on the map... Well now i am in the team of having small lines of soldiers fight each other in the fitting technological ages. I do want those uniforms, but even more i want a representation of the people fighting and dying and not just some buildings or cannons...

I’ve been asking for this on twitter comments, Reddit and here.
If we are not gonna directly control our armies, the least they can do is give us a big spectacle of our general’s genius and failures. By use battalions of many tiny animated units fighting and showing the evolution of military equipment.
This would at least make warfare look entertaining as you feed your nation’s war machine.

With the way flag occupation behaves I always felt that there should have been a spectacle of line infantry armies and artillery meeting across the battle fronts. It's the perfect opportunity to do so. Going from occasional field battles here and there to entire battle lines across continents would be a great way to show the demographic changes over the long 1800s.

I don't agree with this at all. I'm not interested in watching little guys pretend to shoot at each other, so how many soldiers show up on the map is irrelevant to me.

Yeah. It added nothing when it was one big sprite, and it adds nothing when it's a bunch of little sprites. It gave the art department something to do, but if you want to do that a better use of their time would be making map models for each type of building so you can tell better at a glance what buildings a state has.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately and I think that if worse comes to worse they'll give us the war system in Victoria 3 back if things go poorly! Paradox is a strange company sometimes but they'll do their best to fix what's busted! If it comes out that this war system isn't really that fun, they'll change it back. I'm sure of it.

That said, yes there could be more war sprites. It'd be cute!

Well. Thanks for all your inputs. They were very nice to hear and I am happy Im not alone in this

The reason why I created this thread is because immersion is crucial for me to enjoy my games.
Seeing one guy vs one other guy instead of whole armies takes away some of the "pizzazz" that are nice to see and makes me enjoy them.
We have the technology to make it happen without taking away from game complexity so lets do it!

In stellaris one of my favorite mods is the one where explosions and the particle effects are actually much better (coupled with the more overhual mods that make the game much more complex) coupled with the Battle Debris - Starship Graveyards.

Huge battles leave massive debris fields and its awesome to look at while I am waiting for some building.

Looking at the artwork its looking nice and the assets are pretty but I would like to see much more devastation effects and the battles themselves a bit more massive.

One of the first things I checked in the dev diaries was the ground devastation graphics and they look ok. Except the cities themselves arent destroyed...

This is the age when mass mobilizations started to really take shape and demographics really started to take a role.
I dont understand why we need to be satisfied with one guy marching against another guy.

And instead of stripes in the map, add sprites signalling war occupation as well!

More scale would be cool. And the art department isnt connected to the game mechanics (which I hope are as deep as possible) so more sprites would be nice.
We already have map changes based on building. This was an awesome change.

I was hoping the war system at least shows us sprites based on our armies, devastations, wars, etc
