as I have seen in the last WWW it is still possible to just retreat into an enemy province and then get overrun.

It sometimes happens to me, when I do not see, that the unit is attacked.

Also It would be nice to define a retreat direction if a defeat is obvious - like retreating to a transport vessel instead inland retreating to death.

Maybe by retreating a certain amount of material is lost and by retreating to a vessel all of the material has to stay behind.

You retreat into your own provinces. That can only happen if your retreat starts and then the province you are moving to is captured.

You can't retreat from combat onto transport convoys. You can only escape like Dunkirk if you are not in combat.

In HOI3, in a crowded area, you can easily mis-select units thinking you are just canceling an attack or ordering a move or attack but the unit you are giving an order to is at that moment under attack so it retreats instead, sometimes to its doom. Which in a real-time game is a hardship. Picking out individual units on the map does not seem any easier in HOI4 videos.

A "Do you really want to retreat?" pop-up would probably take care of this, but there are surely more clever ways to address this.

In HOI3 prepositioned transport enables withdrawal/retreat aboard in an evacuation, with some rearguard action. Are you sure you must not be out of combat to withdraw or retreat aboard ships in HOI4? That would mean a pinning attack or air attacks could keep a whole stack pinned on the beach/in a port indefinitely.
