Don't support this in spite of having a 64 bit OS myself. Paradox should be aiming to make the most accesssible game they can without scrimping on quality.

64-bit is just marketing. I have yet to see any game that would benefit from it. Most code might even run slower because of cache sizes etc

HoI4 may benefit from >3.5GB RAM, depends on how hungry it gets.
And yes, aside of the RAM issue (most games don't need that much RAM), 64bit needs it's own code base to benefit - too expensive for games.

Perhaps I miscounted but even so, 22% is a pretty big chunk. While it makes sense to go 64-bit at one point or another, it probably won't be now.

no disrespect intended, but your statement is like American republicans stating there isn't any climate change going on in the world and humans haven't contributed to any of it if there was any.

Ok, so 22% of operating systems that games are played on are still out of date 32 bit OS's.. That means that OVER 60% of operating systems that gamers use are 64 bit systems...

SO when the hell, yes 64 bit OS have been out and doing very well for over 5 years! SO when are you developers gonna get off your collective butts and hire someone to write a new strategy game in 64 bit NOW.

Really, what is the excuse?? You know the longer you wait on this the faster you will kill the Strategy genre.

But hey, i don't know a darn thing, i've only been playing computer strategy games since they came out.

Also, if you did manage to get ahead of the game and make a rts strategy game in 64 bit, the number of people with 64 bit OS computers that might play your new 64 bit game would be very very high. And you most prolly will get a bunch of the remainder of those 32 bit gamers to get off their collective butts and upgrade to win 7 64 bit.

Sorry, but i don't concur.. if what you said was true then no gaming company would list 64 bit OS as the recommended OS for their game. Their are some action games that run very well on 64 bit OS.

If your gonna be a leader in gaming, then lead. Please :)

The thing is that 64 bit operating system can easily be made to run 32 bit programs. Other way around this is impossible. So choosing to compile the game to 64 bit, 32 bit systems would be excluded. Compiling to 32 bit doesn't exclude anyone. And like others have said before, compiling to 64 bit doesn't bring any improvement in performance unless the game is expected to use more than about 3GB of RAM. It actually increases the memory usage, since for example numeric variables in the code use twice the memory.

It is beneficial to have 64 bit and lots of memory in the system though. With access to more memory, it's easier to run multiple processes at the same time. However single programs needing the memory is still rare. Mainly it's processes handling huge amounts of data (in my case: video processing, huge audio libraries in virtual instruments, scientific studies for huge datasets) that use lots of memory. Games usually are more than happy with 3GB.

Also I wouldn't put too much emphasis on "recommended OS" listed for games. They might have some optimisations done for 64bit systems but i think they just generally list the newest top system for recommendations.

The big advantage of saying 64-bit OS only is that you dont have to support DirectX 9 and windows XP. Later DX versions are a huge step up from a development standpoint

Makes sense. Although I can't help but feel that the game would benefit from having more RAM available.

Then again, I haven't closely studied the resource use, so I'll leave it to others to determine that.

SO when the hell, yes 64 bit OS have been out and doing very well for over 5 years!
XP x64 launched nine years ago.

Sorry, but i don't concur.. if what you said was true then no gaming company would list 64 bit OS as the recommended OS for their game. Their are some action games that run very well on 64 bit OS.
x64 for gaming is mostly marketing. If your game is state of the art graphics-wise, you'll need x64, though (x86 has problems using more than 2GB VRAM).

Also, if you did manage to get ahead of the game and make a rts strategy game in 64 bit, the number of people with 64 bit OS computers that might play your new 64 bit game would be very very high.
PDS never made RTS, and their games wouldn't work as RTS. And yes, there would be a number of people playing their game on x64 - just as much as if the game was compiled in x86.
The single reason for x64 is more RAM. Most applications won't use more than 2GB RAM (the maximum a x64 OS can assign to a x86 application), while Windows Home carries the 2GB restriction anyways (softcoded, to prevent workstations from running Windows Home Basic/Premium).

are still out of date 32 bit OS's.
x86 is NOT out of date. x86 runs natively on almost all current CPUs (there are some Xeons running x64-only, though), ARM won't collectively switch to 64bit for at least a decade. OSes have to be x64 to be able to address more than 4GB - once the OS is x64, any application using less than 2GB RAM won't benefit from being x64 as well - x64 code is generally slower than x86 code.

Ok, so 22% of operating systems
Windows XP anyone?

Using 32-bit, sadly. I don't have 64-bit available to me, but I'm saving up for a new PC.
Anyway I have no problems running CK2 or EU4, I don't know how intense HOI4 is gonna be, but I hope it'll be playable to me.

The "excuse" is if we make a game that 20% of our customers can't play, we'll have 20% less sales. This would be a bad thing.

But hey, i don't know a darn thing, i've only been playing computer strategy games since they came out.

That and going 64-bit doesnt really have much benefit for the customers that can use it either. its mainly a convenience thing for us.
