Sci fi is full of empires that change there identity at some point.

e.g. United Earth ---> United Federation of Planets
Galactic Republic ---> Galactic Empire
Terran Empire ---> Terran Rebellion

To expect an empire not to change its identity over the centuries is completely unrealistic.

Wait what? Unless there are major changes in the way government works the name of the goverment stays the same. See Roman Empire, United States, Great Britain.

Judging by the reform button here major changes in government will indeed be possible so I don't see why changing the government shouldn't be possible.

Great Britain is an island.

...It is also a kingdom, as your image showed. Hence "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland": it is the union between the kingdoms of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. And, of course, the short name of the kingdom of Great Britain is just "Great Britain". Not sure why this was picked as an example of a country whose name haven't changed, though.

Anyway, in every Paradox game the government can change, so I doubt it won't be the same here. Ethos is a new concept, but it is roughly equivalent to religion and ideology in other games, and those also can change.

Kingdom of Great Britain is a Kingdom. Great Britain without the Kingdom part is a geographical location. It's like calling USA America. Unofficial moniker is plain wrong to use in an official speech or a grand strategy videogame.

You might notice that the Kingdom of England is just called 'England' in Europa Universalis, in fact, Great Britain is just called as such in that game. Actually, basically every country name in every Paradox game is the short form. America is a different case because that name is also used to refer to the whole continent, which includes more countries than just that USA.

To use Great Britain is often wrong in the context of current time, because the UK is more than just Great Britain (either the island or the kingdom). But valergain wasn't being that specific. 'Great Britain' is a valid historical country, just like the Roman Empire.

EU and CK2 also have "Byzantine Empire", the most stupid name possible to use for the remnant of the Roman Empire in those games, because it was never used when the Empire still existed.

From wiki:
The first use of the term "Byzantine" to label the later years of the Roman Empire was in 1557, when the German historian Hieronymus Wolf published his work Corpus Historiæ Byzantinæ, a collection of historical sources. The term comes from "Byzantium", the name of the city of Constantinople before it became Constantine's capital. This older name of the city would rarely be used from this point onward except in historical or poetic contexts. The publication in 1648 of the Byzantine du Louvre (Corpus Scriptorum Historiae Byzantinae), and in 1680 of Du Cange's Historia Byzantina further popularised the use of "Byzantine" among French authors, such asMontesquieu.[9] However, it was not until the mid-19th century that the term came into general use in the Western world. As regards the English historiography in particular, the first occasion of the "Byzantine Empire" appears in an 1857 work of George Finlay (History of the Byzantine Empire from 716 to 1057)

That's like saying calling Iran Persia in their game is stupid. The game is made from a modern western perspective not from the perspective of people who lived in that country. If it was even made by a medieval western perspective it would be called the Greek Empire and not Roman.

You would have something if countries in the game weren't named Germany in it as well.

i suppose it's relatively unsafe to say that we'll be able to commit some of the changes the OP indicated, provided there's the correct DLC installed. UK and USA notwithstanding

Greek Empire is a better option than a completely ahistorical name used only for academical purposes. Seriously, Paradox made norse York turn into Jorvik, celtic britain into Prydain, norse Russia into Gardariki, but Roman Empire is named after a term invented in 16th century. Greek Empire that turns into Basileía Rhōmaíōn when controlled by a greek wouldve been the best option.

Kingdom of Great Britain is a Kingdom. Great Britain without the Kingdom part is a geographical location. It's like calling USA America. Unofficial moniker is plain wrong to use in an official speech or a grand strategy videogame.

It *was* a Kingdom. As it currently stands the British monarch is not the monarch of Great Britain, and also the monarch of Northern Ireland. They are the monarch of the United Kingdom (singular) of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. So Great Britain is now simply a geographical reference to a component of the United Kingdom (again singular).

The original point stands the official title of states can and do change quite rapidly reflecting cultural changes or simple propaganda by the party currently in power. Try find Burma on an up to date map. Or Rhodesia. Or try find the city of Bombay. I don't see what anyone gains by arguing against that reality.

In either case, I think the original ask is very much on the edge of "Dont care", and as some have noted its possible to custom name any CK 2 title in vanilla so its possible (though not important) that Stellaris would support such customisation for whoever cares to update their faction name for whatever reason.
