Playing around with the new chain of command, i decided to my first game with Romania instead of Soviet Union.

If i attack with a corps, say 3 Inf-Divs + HQ...is that bad for the HQ, should i only attack with the divs individually?
Will the HQ fight in the frontline and get destroyed or something ?

If you have enough combat divisions to fill the front the AI will normally just stay in reserve, but if you don't have enough or a division retreats your HQ may end up fighting, which is not good for its health.

It's always tough going into a scenario that's already set up - when you play GC and arrange all the units yourself, and know how everything is ordered, it's much easier to get a hang of, I'm sure.

And as you play more, you'll get used to it.

We got used to being able to do everything in a HOI game with a mouse, Now, we cant do that. This game has an extremely high learning curve to it now more than ever. I did get to the end of the demo and i did defeat Poland. Well, i defeated Poland's armed forces.

Second game i tried to use the 'objective's thing and it was a disaster. it wouldn't work at all on the Polish front.

The Tutorials are lame and they give one the firm idea that gameplay will be exactly like any other version of HOI. That is a bold faced lie.

The previous versions of HOI were nice to play... all u had to do was concentrate on strategy and playing the game. This game u cant even see who u are attacking.

Sorry for the harsh review guys, but this is very disappointing.

The interface is easy to work with, it's just that in the demo (as most of us tried Germany I bet) placed us immediately into war. I couldn't figure out why my armies were moving so slow till I realized that I only had a couple armored divisions, and that I had no real idea where they were placed. Starting from the 36 GC will allow much better control. Remember all those threads about how the units in the scenarios from HOI II were all in a mish-mash? Same thing here. Historically accurate, but hard for game play, especially those of us used to HOI II instincts.

My personal thoughts are that the theater AIs aren't as good as a human, so I'll probably use AI to command corps and maybe armies on some fronts. Much more realistic than HOI 2 though. maybe a good expansion would be to allow MP co-op in the same nation, so one player can do East front, and the other west front.

I really can't believe you never used the keyboard during HoI2. There's the pause key, shift + drag selecting, ctrl right click, ctrl + # to save to a group etc. It's the exact same in 3.

If nothing happened when you set objectives you probably didn't change out of prepare stance. I answered you in the other thread already, so I'm not sure why you're repeating the same complaints again.

Also, if you've given a higher HQ an order, you can't give subordinate HQs orders without first A) breaking that HQ out of the hierarchy, or B) turning off the higher HQs orders. That might be part of the problem. Giving orders at theater level, then trying to AI manage a couple levels down.

I think part of the problem is just how the armies and navies have been laid out by Paradox.

I'm somewhat of a neat freak with my units. For example, I'll assign one specific airfield for TACs, another for INT, another for NAV etc. Armies and naval groups have their spots, I remember where I parked a bunch of subs or armored units.

When you start in 1936, you can rearrange all these to your liking, you remember where everything is and its ready for battle.

Instead you inherit a mess ;) (i mean no offense by the way)

Personally I think the tutorial is the problem, I didn't really learn a thing that wasn't obvious in it. It took me to the end of the invasion of poland to realize how to use objectives to automate the army, for instance. I also think the ai is pretty bad, especially the naval.. By december I was two provinces from paris and had already launched a successful sealion to distract the british, just waiting on reinforcements.. The british navy did nothing to stop this. I didn't like how I couldn't bring italy into a war without bringing japan, either, I don't like how the axis starts out with all 3 majors in it.
The new features, however, are amazing. The way diplomacy works is much better, and intelligence is also amazing. The lack of auto sliders was only slightly annoying, though I didn't care about production enough to use it too often. Some ahistorical things bugged me a bit as Ireland joined the allies, and Argentina + Nationalist Spain joined the axis (influencing nations might be a bit too useful).. Overall I'd say that the game is slightly better than HoI2 from what I've seen, though I'm sure it will become quite awesome.

No, I think you're 100% right. I would have all my Theater/Army Groups/Army/Corps laid out nicely with all combat divisions located with a Corps. Each Army or Army group would also be given Air units for support. The Air units themselves would be broken down, with the TAC, CAS, and INT's separated into their own units.

To me, the way it's laid out right now just seems like an unintuitive mess.

daunting, i cannot wait to start in 36, as canada or something, i feel like I did when i played Hoi for the first time and that turned out great, so i have faith. You cannot judge a game so fast, especially from the demo.

well i must say i love the new system of chain of command, feels a lot more like a proper wargame now.

my 1st thoughts when i loaded up and saw the map with all the provinces was that it looked superb:)

my 2nd thought was that theres gonna be people maybe put of with the complexity, that must have played on the devs minds while designing the game but my hat goes of to them and im glad theyve made it this way.

lookin forward to the full release:D

Remember, the demo starts you into immediate action. Even in HOI II, you could get annexed by the Poles if you didn't know what you were doing, especially if your first time ever in the game, you immediately invaded Poland within the first five minutes.

I'm going to love this game, and my wife is going to hate it. :) :)

I wish the pause button was on the date like HOI2 honestly. It seems like right now it takes up space. Plus for me at least seeing PAUSE up there all the time confuses me a bit as i think the game is paused.

I think this is just a matter of getting used to the interface.

Oh...and Id like for them to bring back right clicking on a countries land to bring up a menu..back in HOI2 i used to right click diplomacy all the time.

I replayed it, twice, and started to understand the whole system.

I still do not like it at all. I just told both theaters to blitz, and pretty soon I had poland and some of France. (Italy took 95% of it) Then I declared war on the Sovite Union, and I started to win too. While doing nothing.

I still couldn't figure out how to make different theaters after playing around with HQ units, but I get how everything works now.

I think the full game will be much easier since I will armies that I made. I wanted to have large groups of 5-10 divisions, but since the whole entire army is already set up I can't. If I select an HQ unit and click on select all, I end up selecting 8 divisions all in separate provinces.

But yeah, with the full game the whole unit confusion should disappear as the whole system will be set up to our specifications.

You cannot make theatres, the closes you can get is pressing the "Define theatres" button on the production screen which makes the AI considers your theatres anew, they'll normally only change fater your defend a nation or open a new front etc though.
