1) Why are we using sea routes when there aren't enough convoys but plenty of trains in stock and how do we change this? Ultimately, how is a supply path chosen, and what's the best way to change this? Shorter supply lines = less potential for disruption. Taking a train in the wrong direction to get on a convoy which doesn't exist, to sail all the way around the continent is an extreme example of poor pathing.

2) My hubs can't reach the front lines. The tooltip says range is affected by weather, ground conditions, infrastructure, railway level, and motorization.

Is there anything I can do about weather and ground conditions, or are those just for flavour?

Is there a way I can build better trucks, or do research upgrades help them increase their distribution range? I don't have a "create variant" button in the production tab.

I'm guessing that practically speaking, I can choose to upgrade the railways or the infrastructure, but which one? Does anyone have some numbers on this?

3) What is going on with "supply remaining in province"? I don't understand this at all.

It would help me a lot of someone would explain things more clearly. The tooltip talks about supply ratio, but ratio of what to what? How much "supply" does a unit have?

E.g.
hoi4-supply-remaining.png

"Supply Remaining in Province: 2.36"

So, all supply has been met, and 2.36 units of supply are remaining... but apparently not, because my divisions are severely lacking in supply. I guess that's why the province is orange, even though the tooltip text is blue.

I guess the point is, what does a unit of supply practically get me?

Any other info?

Thanks

1) I always address this by blocking sea routes through certain sea zones. This situation exists when you first start as the Soviets and blocking zones appears to be the only solution. The supply AI tries to maximise supply everywhere that supply is needed even if existing land based supply would be perfectly adequate. I think you need man the guns dlc to be able to do this.

2) You can improve range by switching on truck mode but this will lose trucks. I always move the peace time armed forces to a more easily supplied pattern. I have to admit more recently I have gone for the easiest to organise which is to group everything into one big army and give then a load of provinces to garrison so they spread out nice and thinly. This is me being a bit lazy and just wanting to get everyone to a no attrition status

I tend not to improve the supply structure too much as I'm always kind of expecting the Germans to make some real progress invading and don't want them to have better supply when they do.

3) Supply is no both a per province and per hub thing. Provinces have a supply level for the units present and supply left in province gives you a guide to how many more divisions you can locate there before they suffer low supply conditions. In addition all units impose a load on the hubs that are in range and will suffer low supply if the hub capacity is exceeded. You can improve the supply situation by enabling truck levels which increase the flow of supplies from a hub and the range from the hub. Longer range from hubs a bit further back can improve total supply capacity by beginning to supply frontline provinces which were otherwise outside of their range.

Take care using truck mode as not only does this require trucks to set up but also loses trucks to attrition.

I don't worry about province supply. I do worry about the hub number (like 5/20 typically).

It shouldn't be orange near a hub.
My guess is it's a convoy issue if not overcrowded

as far as sea vs land, I think it decides based on rail road quality.

basically if this is USSR, find the hub in Vladivostok or whatever and upgrade it by hitting the rail upgrade circle when in supply mode to upgrade all rails leading to Vladivostok.

my theory is you have bad rails and infrastructure in middle Russia so the game uses these sea routes. Or there isn't a rail attached to those hubs.

but the sea convoy supply thing is a known issue with no immediate fix. Hawaii gets its supply from Maryland (or DC), not California.
