You can change the slider for "Mid-Game" before you start to a later date, making the Great Khan spawn later where you can hopefully fight him (he becomes stronger with each Satrapy, so try to fight him as soon as possible after he spawns)

If he spawns far away from you, he might end up dying before he reaches you (either killed in battle or by event. Otherwise the Great Khan lives for a maximum of 45 years)

You can also submit, and then strengthen yourself for your eventual freedom.

You can also prevent the Great Khan from spawning entirely by removing all Marauders before you start a game.

If you do submit as a Satrapy, once the Great Khan dies a couple of things might happen:
1. If the Great Khan never settled any planets, they revert to a Marauder faction (you regain your freedom)
2. If a few planets were settled, it becomes a standard empire, and you become a subject (and you can fight for your freedom)
3. If many planets were settled, they split into multiple empires that will war with one another (not sure what will happen to Satrapies at this point)
4. If the Great Khan had at least 2 Satrapies, there's a chance they will become a Federation Builder and they will invite all former Satrapies to join it.

Setting mid-game crisis slider so low is basically invitation for Khan to come and ruin the galaxy. By 2260s Khan has more ships than the whole galaxy combined, and... well, it's not supposed to go like that. That's why the default mid-game year is 2300.

Actually, 2 is always a chance if at least 1 planet is captured, it's just that it will *always* happened if the # of planets they control is less than 6 and Satrapies less than 2.

Otherwise, there is still either a 1 in 8 or 1 in 7 chance of it still happening, depending on whether the khan also had 2 Satrapies or not.

I usually do not even bother fighting Khan. He will die soon anyway. In fact, sometimes he even helps me cause I can focus on science and building without caring about protection. When he dies I'm usually strong enough to conquer some of my neighbours.

I think the OP isn't referring to the Khan waking up so early but that the Marauders come to wreck his crap early and THEN later wakes up [guessing] ....

In my games I can usually bribe the early raiding parties to not hit my systems. If they don't take bribes and you have no hope of fighting them then it may be wiser to just let them wreck one of your planets and rebuild.

I also delay "mid game year" by 25 years as that allows for extra fleet build-up time. The extra 25 years makes a HUGE difference seeing as it's often the difference between a close fight [hard-won-victory] if the Khan wakes up early vs. steamrolling the Khan.

I was stoked when I saw this for the first time last game (The Khan had all but one empire as a Satrapy).

But the federation fell apart in a month since everyone hated the Khan and each other. I think maybe they should rework that a little bit.

The marauders only send a single fleet to your nearest inhabited world and bombard it for a bit (~25% devastation I've found, not sure if they steal your pops/raid), you can just ignore them and save your alloys. Only the awakened Khan can make you a satrapy.
