Hello.
They are very bugged and stupid in many ways. There is just a pointless war that takes really long time. It's not just HRE, it involves the whole of Europe, and the League choices are stupid - for example Catholic France was fighting for the Protestant league in one of my games. I'm writing this post after I needed to fight against my vassal in a League war, they got sieged by me (I wanted them out of the war) and the war leader decided to give most of their provinces to one of my rivals...

Well, I'd be surprised if France was fighting on Catholic side.

It's about the balance of power. For the same reason France didn't help Austria/the Commonwealth around the 1683 siege of Vienna: the Sun King wanted his rival in the Habsburgs taken down a notch.

Unfortunately the religious league war in my Commonwealth game was ridiculously unbalanced, with Russia and Castile/PU'd Aragon joining the Catholics and France being the sole Protestant power despite being Catholic. I wasn't on either side but I ended up being called to fight for the Catholics, which I accepted, because I'm sandwiched between Russia and Austria-Hungary.

The only thing that doesn't really work with the leagues is that it's happening a bit early (always had it early 16th for me).
Otherwise, France DID fight with the protestant league (and Ottomans gave support and troops), so maybe you should learn a bit about history before saying it's nonsensical. It was much more interesting to weaken the emperor than to want the emperor to be catholic (which has no advantage for France).

The historical 30 yrs war had both Ottoman and France involvement on the protestant side, iirc. Muscovy and Ottomans were 2 of the first to join in my last game. To be expected.
