In many cases, state edicts are useful only for one year, for example when you want to encourage development. However players often forget to cancel the edict after a year and continue to pay for it for nothing. It feels very frustrating, and it is a burden to micromanage state edicts.

The solution is simple. Simply add a checkbox available when you publish a new edict: ‘automatically cancel the edict one year after its enactment’.

This isn’t an issue that I have had but I do see your point. A yearly pop up that says this edict has expired would you like to continue and then the option to continue or stop would also work and for different durations.

Your idea is a good one. But you need to post it in the Suggestions sub-forum if you want it to get up.

It really does work when you post there and get enough upvotes. I suggested that the devs added a Pirate Map mode earlier this year, and sure enough it became a thing in the 1.34 patch.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind this. Or maybe just make the ducat cost of the first year paid up-front, like condottieri.
Upfront cost for state edicts for a year could put you in a weird situation where you end up with a loan for an expense which you could've have otherwise paid in monthly installments without going into debt. Not to mention situations where you half state and apply an edict for a shorter while than a year (for example you do a conversion and apply the missionary edict), then abandon the half state and the edict with it, say after 6 months, but you paid for a whole year, ending up with a net loss.

You're absolutely right about these... but personally, I'd happily accept the consequence of those edge cases and ensuing cost if it meant I'd stop realizing that I've accidentally had unnecessary edicts running in multiple states for a century.
