Rather than having 3 separate units of Tactical Bombers/Naval Bombers/Strategic Bombers can I suggest you just have one unit of bombers. You supply the types of aircraft into that unit so you could change the abilities of the bomber unit by adding or removing aircraft in the unit inventory.

The same logic would apply to combining Interceptors/Fighters/Close Air Support into one unit. By adding or removing aircraft you would defacto change its abilities.

I don't think it'd be appropriate. If your feeding a unit different aircraft don't you still really have different aircraft? and they vary too much in function to do away with different aircraft. I'd prefer to see the ability to customize the aircraft determine what kind of aircraft unit it is best suited for. Changing the type of payload and engines for example. That said after seeing how they are doing the tanks, I still feel you need more than one customizable bomber type, you shouldn't be able to place the kind of payload and engines of a strategic bomber on close air support for example. It would require different chassis. I don't have a problem if it's done like tanks.

They could just seperate aircraft by propellers.
So you have a Heavy airframe (4 engine), a Medium airframe (2 engine) and a Light airframe (Single engine)
It would be cool if Aircraft were like ships are now, so you don't have Escorts and Interceptors as different units, if you want an Escort you just design a single engine plane with as much range as you can.
And if you want a Naval Bomber, you give a 4 or 2 engine aircraft big heavy fuel tanks, light armour, high tech radar and anything else you'd need.

But to be honest, I'm fine with the current system. It probably makes it easier for the AI to build and use it's airforce effectively, and that's more important.

I like your propeller idea but what about jets? Would a Me 262 (jet fighter) be the same airframe as the Ar 234 (tactical jet bomber)?

I am assuming that unlike HOI3 a interceptor "brigade" will be loosing individual fighters over the course of a mission. Since plane losses will have to be manufactured by factories it would be nice to be able to replace interceptors with fighters (or vica versa) rather than having two different factories being needed to maintain fighter "brigades" and interceptor "brigades".

The system is perfectly fine as it is.
The only debatable thing is having separate fighter and interceptor, but even then i`m kind of fine with it, as all ww2 major countries had at least 2 or more types of fighter plane in constant production and upgrading.

There is still a need to teach the crews and pilots to perform different missions, as pilots for different types of bomber needed some very different skills to effectivly hit their targets. So you create a unit and train pilots and ground crews for specific mission, and then stuff them with planes that can do the mission. Training pilots to do multiple things usually ended up with having sup-par pilots in every category, unable to do anything of use. Likewise, re-teaching bomber fighters to dogfight was absolutely useless as later in the war Germans figured from complete failure of such pilots in practice of 1944 and 1945.

You train pilot to do one thing well. Either bomb towns, or ships or troops, or dogfight.

I'd like to see more unit types to be honest. There are significant numbers of land units so why does the air war need to be simplified? I'd like to see NAVs split into maritime recon aircraft and light coastal command type aircraft. It looks like day/night missions are going to have clearer distinctions this time and so having night fighters would also be good. As long as the unit has a specific job to do it should be included. For this reason I don't think twin egine fighters should be included because I don't think they offer anything different to FTRs.

This propably won't happen, but I'd love photo recon planes to be included as well at some level. It does my head in when playing HOI3 and you can't see what's happening in a specific province (results of bombings, ships in port etc). This could be abstracted but I think it needs to be in there.

Don't get me wrong I am not asking for a simplified tech tree I am just asking for flexibility. There is not reason why pilots from a fighter "brigade" cannot fly interceptors or close air support planes. The same thing should go with pilots of tactical bombers should be able to fly strategic bombers/naval bombers If in the beginning of the game you start off with say 6 interceptor "brigades" and you choose to focus of fighters rather than interceptors its seems silly that you cannot upgrade your legacy brigades by replacing interceptor planes with fighter planes and instead have to choose between letting them wither to combat ineffectiveness or be forced to dedicate a factory making interceptors just to support legacy units.

The point is, they would fly them so badly, you shouldn`t want that. It is also a huge waiste to teach every pilot everything.
