I guess not everyone knows, but it was possible to have 2 or more players on the same country.
1) You create a multiplayer game with only one human player. You press play and find the familiar, by now, beginning screen.
2) One or more of your friends uses hotjoin to join your game.
3) At the empire selection screen, they open the console.
4) In the console, they type "play 0" and press enter.
5) Then, choose the Observer (or anything else, I don't think this step matters)
6) You are in the game while playing the same empire.
It worked fine, we played hundreds of years, did not notice any bugs with that at all and it was extremely fun.
Sadly, in recent 2.1 patch when we tried to play like that we found out that it is not possible anymore - when you try to use "play" command in console to select country with player on it, it says something like "impossible to switch to country".

Paradox, please, bring co-op back. :(

Thank you for explaining how it worked!

I see no reason to not "bring it back" in a more official way. EU4 has a coop feature, and everything seems to be already in place for Stellaris.

Bringing this up again?

Anything you have to use the console for isn't really a supported or intended game mode.

If it was intended, there'd be a non-console method to do it.

That does sound interesting tbh. I always play coop with my spouse but we each start with our empire and just work together. Did not know that mode of play op is describing was ever a thing in Stellaris.
