Something simple like: If the version number in the .mod file don't match the games don't load the mod.
It would cut down on a lot of peoples crashing issues as soon as a new patch is released and the load their games with outdated mods.
I think world of warcraft have something similar for anyone who played that with addons.

Better yet, add a system to mod only parts of what is now in defines.lua, because I suspect that's what causes 90% of the crashes...

Yea, it would be pretty nice to have a defines_overwrite.lua file or something.

So I could have this and not have to mess with the defines every time they change.

It can't just be a "version number doesn't match, don't load", because there are plenty of mods that do not go out of date (and in fact, I specifically write many mods so that they don't go out of date, and so I don't have to bother with updating them every patch).
So if it does get implemented, it would have to be like WoW, where there is a notification "might be out of date", but you can still load it.
