Portugal is tough... very tough... :)

Try Rumania or Finland so you can get to be part of that border conflict... or something in South America wher you can at least have fun beating the crap out of other small countries...

If you are playing as Portugal, when the Spanish Civil War fires, see if you can grab as much IC provinces as you can.. if you are lucky, really lucky, you can annex either of the two Spains or wait until one finishes off the other and then annex Spain itself (I think you need to grab the African colonies for that one to fire).

Will be very hard as your second game. I would play some of the majors for a while to get used to the game mechanics if only for the fact that they will survive longer and allow you more time to get an understanding of things.

Portugal can be fun tho, as has been said spain can provide some sport as can africa. I have seen the AI take a LOT of africa with portugal and have thought of having a go myself.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes :)

Thanks for your tips... I never thought expanding in the colonies... Only in spain... because of the IC and resources it can give... Actually my first one was with portugal too, I expanded my IC until 1947, joined the war on the allied side, and now I have 74 infantry divisions and 4 armoured ones (sherman tanks), and 4 tatical bombers and a navy with 18 ships, mostly of destroyers, 1 heavy cruiser and another fleet composed of submarines. It is 1950, declared war on republican spain and soon as I declare war to RS, soviet union invades spain letting me no space, but even so I was able to conquer badajoz, la coruna, huelva seville and malaga... and now I'm stuck beneath SU... They have all france and spain, all the middle countries between SU and spain are independent but have stalinist regimes... Sure I won't declare war on SU now since I won't stand a chance... maybe I'll start a new one... Besides I'm a newbie and I don't know how to organize my army, if all togheter or separate divisions, and where and how to start my invasion... I was thinking on holding coruna and oporto and starting to launch a large offensive in southern spain. Maybe it ins't even worth it because soon I'll be crushed when all SU armies gather up togheter... My total IC is 83, I have 140 TC, 0,00% dissent, I am very relied on my trades with the USA, or else I wouldn't have energy and metal to rely on...

If you are going to play as Portugal, take a look at who you can attack and get away with it: Spain, Belgium, Netherlands. Each offers a chance that the UK or France will DOW you, but maybe not. If you can grab a few ISc during the SCW, and you can build up a reasonable navy and army, think about taking on Beligum in Africa, and then seeing if you can take out Amsterdam and then annex it... :)

I had tons of fun playing as Brazil. Not nearly as small as Portugal, but you are IC bound. Go for it and just play for a little while. I will say you learn more when playing IC bound countries because you really get the hang of bang for buck units and wars.

I actually thought one of my most fun games was as Argentina... Took out Brazil in the 1st 6 or 7 months of the game... Rest of South America before the onset of WWII... Also took Portugal, so I had bases on nearly every continent... Ended up somewhere around 90 or 100 base IC ( I forget exactly )...

Havent played Argentina yet... loved playing as Rumania, though my decision to attack the Soviets, while very rewarding, got bogged down by Japan not being in the Axis (and the fact that pissing around with the editor corrupted my game files resulting in a reload and a loss of the damn Rumanian save)...

Having a blast trying to unite Africa as Wakanda (see the AAR)...

Agentina or Brazil would be cool if there was a chance to take all the land in the Americas... :)

Heh denmark is pretty hard to... Very funny to have good relationship with Germany, and then backstab them while they are in the middle of barberossa - but the game is to limited. Playing as Romania or Argantine / Brazil can be rewarding, and you can survive a war against some of the big countries for years

You would be pretty screwed on doing this idea... as the convoy system is broken. With the messed up job parajoke did with the "new" convoy system you wouldnt have a chance with any troops stationed in east timor, they would loose their STR within a couple months

Ahh the mini nations they are just so much fun, but take sooo long to get to where you want them to be.

I played as Cuba, built up my initial calvery and infantry division to 1936 standard, I built 2 transports and invaded the Dominican Republic, took Santiago unopposed and then took Santa Domingo. Boom you just received enough resources to sustain yourself as well as another 7 IC. Then you hit Haiti for another quick 6 IC and resources. Build up another 2 Infantry divisions attached AC and MP to them and get some destroyers as an escort for the transport fleet, and begin the invasion of Latin America!

When I left off I had an elite "Havana Corps" of 6 divisions with artillary, MP, AC, etc and Nicaragua, Panama, Costa Rica, Honduras, etc all under my control. Next stop Mexico and Guatimala!

But I have to note since your VERY limited in both Industrial Capacity and tech teams it takes a long time to carry out your plans. From 1936-1941 I only had a bare foothold in central america in Panima and Costa Rica.

But really the very small nations that only have 5-8 IC are amazingly fun to play as but you have to be very patient. Your probably going to throw out maybe 2 divisions at the MOST per year until you expand since Tech research is important, I find you need to keep your army even if it's small a leg advanced on your neighbors if you can.

If you really want to try a mini power not just a minor take a Central American nation, because you can easily produce an extra division at the start of the game enough to quickly subdue a neighbor, say as Nicaragua you build an Infantry division with an AC real fast and steamroll Costa Rica and then Panama. Build up a small Central American power by 1937 if you planned it out you should have from Panama up to Mexico and enough IC to begin upgrading your formations or preparing a small Navy, or to consider an expedition to Mexico or South America. It's a very easy mini to begin as.

So far so good against soviet union... I thought I wouldn't stand a chance at the beggining but I've managed to advance my lines a bit further... but I made a stupid mistake, I should had placed more troops in north, not south...Now I'll have to face the consequences... My southern troops will take ages before reaching central spain and fighting soviet reinforcments... I guess nobodies perfect and since I'm a beginner I'm learning from my mistakes
Could a small country like Portugal someday be able to defeat the mighty mother russia? (oh well I wish I could have made an AAR...)

Now if you want possibly the most minor of all the minors then try Luxembourg. In fact has anyone had an even remotely successful game playing as them?

I did! For fun, I built two Inf div's in 1936 along with art brigades for those and the starting division, then threw everything into forts.

I had lvl 8 by 1940. The Germans never attacked, and stationed so many troops to isolate me that England landed at Kiel and marched to Berlin!
