In playing 1.09 Vanilla, I realize that it can be quite fun playing a "mediterranean power" Venice where I gobble up Italy, the Balkans, and Greece, but I recently had another thought. Is it possible to make Venice into a burgeoning overseas colonial empire, with colonies in, say, North America, Canada, Mexico, South America, or even India? I'm not sure how I'd go about discovering these places...try to ally with Portugal/Spain and swap maps, maybe? What are the slider settings I need to randomly get explorers/conquistadors (since I'm assuming, probably correctly, that Venice doesn't get any of those naturally by event like historical colonial powers do.) Is there any hope of beating the Iberians to the Americas or the British to India?

Any other suggestions are, naturally, welcome :)

Of course it´s possible, even the ai can do it. Not beating the Iberians to the new world, but at least they put up some Tp´s and some colony from time to time. For a human player, I would spend the 15th century by securing my position in the med, and since you´re going for the new world, taking Sicily and Andalucia (When the CoT appears) would be good. Other than that, invest in naval and trade, and try to have good relations with your neighbours, especially Austria and Hungary, they can easily crush you, and they do have cores on you! I would concentrate my efforts on Africa, Brazil and India, since everyone goes for NA, so you should´nt, just because. Good luck,:)

Oh, and go naval,:)

The requirements for an explorer are naval tech 11 and trade tech 3. As venice, this should be easy to achieve in a reasonable timeframe. You might find it hard to beat Spain to America, but you should be able to beat everyone else to everywhere else, if you fight regular wars against Portugal to steal their maps until you get to level 11.

The best way to get maps is to regulary beat up Portugal and get their maps.

Explorers/conquistadors depend on narrowmindedness and land/naval sliders, but I don't now the exact numbers right now.

Even if you get to the Americas early, there is still ToT to consider, and the North America is outside that. India is not worth it, IMHO, especially if you're playing some of the mods and there are no free provinces. Indonesian islands are also part of the ToT, so its also a problem. The only thing remaining is to go for the Pacific islands (sugar/spices), and that takes an explorer.

Great advice. I have two questions:

What exactly do I need to beat the maps out of Portugal? Simply defeat them in any war (positive warscore or tie on the defensive?) Conquer a particular province? Is there some specific demand I need to make?

Also, what exactly is the "ToT?" I'm not paying any mods, just 1.09 Vanilla. I tried AGCEEP and didn't really like it at all, no offense to those who do.

1. IF you take their capital you get all their maps.

2. The TOT is a treaty that divided the world into 2 halves, one for portugal and one for spain. In game terms, this means that if you have a colony in one of those provinces, spain/portugal can siege and take them over without declaring war on you first. You'll know which provinces are in the TOT because when you go to the "send colonist" screen, their will be a shield on the province(either spains or portugals).

Also to gain a conquistador you should be as close to narrowminded on the narrow/innovative slider as possible.
For the explorer, same but with naval on the naval/land.

For both I found i start to get them when I'm in position 2 or closer (2 away from full naval or narrowminded) to the left side of slider. Without checking I can't say 100% sure that it should be at 2...maybe 1 maybe 3, but it is listed as a requirement for the random explorer/conquist events. As an added bonus more narrowminded and more naval get you more colonists.

Used this in a recent game as China and was able to colonize Austrailia, Western North America, conquer the Aztecs and even get some colonies in Eastern and South Africa. Interesting game...playing now and will probably convert it to Vicky :D

Usually going Naval is enough , narrowmind only gives more colonists
conquistadors only trigger is year OR
NOT = { domestic = { type = innovative value = 4 } }
AS about explorer triggers are
trigger = {
year = 1450
naval = 11 # 1518
trade = 3 # 1500
NOT = { domestic = { type = land value = 4 } }

OR
trigger = {
year = 1500
naval = 18 # 1600
trade = 5 # 1570

OR
trigger = {
year = 1500
naval = 18 # 1600
trade = 5 # 1570
NOT = { domestic = { type = land value = 4 } }
NOT = { domestic = { type = mercantilism value = 4 } }

So you can still get explorers/conquistadors as innovative/naval only that the chances are bit smaller.From my little personal experience it is relavively easy to colonise as Venice and remember you only need to built a small fortress to protect your colonies from ToT (or of course go Protestand)
